  4. #1 - Popular Sovereignty Who gives our government it’s power? • The people rule • “classical liberalism”: emphasizes freedom, democracy, and the importance of the individual

  5. #2 - Republicanism How are our views represented in our Government? • Voting: for a person of our choice, to represent us… • Representative Democracy • Peopleelect reps to make laws and properly exercise the powers of government…

  6. #3 - Federalism How is power shared between our Central Government & the States? • Power is shared between central & state governments…Dual Sovereignty • National Gov’t: ‘delegated powers’ • State Gov’ts: ‘’reserved powers’ • Powers shared by both: ‘concurrent powers’

  7. #3 - Federalism How is power shared between our Central Government & the States? Powers Delegated To the National Government Powers that are ‘Shared’ Aka: Concurrent Powers Powers Reserved for the State Governments

  8. #4 – Separation of Powers How is power divided in our Government? • Our Government is divided into three (3) branches… • Legislative Branch (Congress) – Article 1 • Executive Branch (President) – Article 2 • Judicial Branch (Supreme Court) – Art.3 • No one branch is given all the power…

  9. #4 – Separation of Powers How is power divided in our Government?

  10. #5 – Checks & Balances How is our Government’s power evenly distributed? • Each branch of government can exercise checks, or control, over other branches… • Founding Fathers included these ‘checks & balances’ so all three (3) branches of government would work fairly with each other… • The three (3) branches have to rely on each other to get the job done…

  11. #5 – Checks & Balances How is our Government’s power evenly distributed?

  12. #6 – Limited Government How is abuse of power prevented in our Government? • The Founding Fathers restricted the power of government…in the Constitution… • Powers denied Congress (Art.1 – Sec 9) • Powers denied the States (Art.1 – Sec 10) • ‘Rule of Law’ applies to ALL Americans; citizens and our leaders…no exemptions!

  13. #7 – Individual Rights How are our own rights protected? • TheBill of Rights (Amendments 1-10) shields us from an overly powerful government… • The Bill of Rights also guarantees us certain individual rights & liberties…

  14. #7 – Individual Rights How are our own rights protected? • Civil Liberties: freedoms protected by limits on government…(ie. Prohibits gov’t from interfering with freedom of speech or religion)… • Civil Rights: positive acts by gov’t to protect citizens against injustice…(ie. protect our rights to meet peacefully, or ask the gov’t to correct a problem)…
