  1. Oaklands Residential Care Home Newsletter May/June 2012 Westfield Avenue, Barnstaple, Devon, EX31 2DY Tel: 01271 374231 Email: oaklands-care-home@hotmail.co.uk www.oaklands-care-home.com This last few months have really flown by; it’s hard to believe that we are nearly half way through the year already. The staff here at Oaklands have been attending a variety of training courses (from Manual Handling, to Mental Capacity and Deprivation of Liberty, to Adult Safeguarding) some for a refresher, others as first timers. With the new equipment that was purchased (chair weighing scales, rotary stand, handling belts and different sized slings for the hoister) the staff was kept up to date on how to use them with ‘in house training’. Soon more training will be delivered according to the specific needs of our staff. Thanks to Lisa Brown, we now have a brilliant cabinet displaying great memorabilia in our dining room, offering an amazing journey down Memory Lane. Residents, visitors and staff all enjoy admiring it. If you have anything else to add to the cabinet please contact Lisa. • A warm welcome goes to our new Resident Eric Turner. • We would also like to extend a welcome to our new members of staff at Oaklands; Tracy Prowse, Tammy Wrey, Demi Reilley, Mikila Murray and Emma McNulty. BarbaraAllenhas retired after being with us for 8 years. Barbara has been a dedicated member of the Oaklands team and will surely be missed by all. We wish Barbara all the best for her well deserved retirement! The new menus at Oaklands have really brought in an international vibe; from mild turkey curry, to lasagne, to macaroni cheese, to homemade meatballs and beef burgers and much more. The residents have really been enjoying the new tastes being introduced to their menus, although we are of course still sticking to the old firm favourites! We now offer a selection of delicious homemade soups as the first course of the Resident’s tea and it has certainly being enjoyed by all. Lately, our Residents have been enjoying a fabulous variety of new activities. One fantastic project involved painting and glittering picture frames – perfect for storing some lovely mementoes. The ladies really enjoy having a manicure, where they receive a blissful hand massage and are able to choose from a variety of colours to have their nails varnished. The gentleman are not left out as they also receive hand massages and have their nails trimmed. There are many craft activities where Residents are able to do some lovely colouring, cutting, sticking and gluing and have their final art displayed in our Gallery for all to see. Oaklands will be celebrating the Queen’s Jubilee with an indoor party on Saturday, 9th June from 1.45pm. We will be having the show ‘My Kind Of Music’, with Geoff Marshall on the keyboard as well as his partner who will be providing light hearted entertainment. Their shows are created especially for care homes and include well-loved songs. The shows are completely interactive so Residents are encouraged to join in every step of the way through singing and moving along. We have had the pleasure of having them before and it was a real success amongst the Residents. We will also be having bunting, flags, lovely snacks, cakes and a glass of sherry. Everybody is welcome so don’t miss the opportunity to celebrate an important moment in British History with us! We would like to wish a very HappyBirthday to John Hall, Oaklands proprietor (20/05), to our Residents: Irene Pearsall (02/05), Yvonne Smith (05/05), Lillian Chapple (13/05), Karl Zacharias (22/05), Patricia Smith (19/06) and Herbert Taylor (21/06), and to our Staff: Vicky Shaddick (25/05) and Demi Reilley (14/06)! Please let us know your email address to receive future newsletters.
