Introduction FoodXchange.com®is a global food procurement company. Our expertise began in culinary herbs, but now we offer a wide range of food products. By partnering with the best growers around the world we are able to provide premium products to our customers. Over the years we have increased our focus on food safety. Hence, using our direct distribution model we can provide the best traceability in the business.
Farms Our winter farm is located in Pescadero, Mexico which is just north of Cabo San Lucas and our summer production farm is located in Modesto, California. These locations offer the perfect climate for producing delicious and robust herbs. From the seeds that are planted in the ground to the herbs that arrive at your restaurant our product is never out of our control. This allows us to provide the highest quality product at the lowest price with unmatched traceability.
Seeds All of our seeds are ordered from top American seed companies such as Ahern or Harris Moran. Depending on the product, seeds are either planted in our indoor nursery in trays or they are direct seeded. The nursery trays remain inside for 30 to 40 days until the plant is strong enough to be moved into the field. The nursery is maintained meticulously and adheres to all GAP standards. The fields are prepared in advance using fertilizer, mulch, and of course have monthly water tests. Our certification process dictates that our property, as well as those surrounding us, must be free of all possible contamination.
Fields Depending on the crop, the plants are placed in designated fields. To ensure the strongest and healthiest plants we rotate fields on a yearly basis. This helps replenish the soil and provides the best production.
Harvesting When the plants are ready to be harvested the experienced picking crews are brought in. They begin early in the morning so that the temperature is as cool as possible. When the product is picked it is placed into plastic or corrugated picking boxes. These boxes are transported from the field to the pack house. During the day we monitor the temperature of each arrival to the packing house. This insures the product starts off with the best possible shelf life.
Packhouse After harvesting the product is placed in the packing area which is kept at 64 degrees and processed immediately. This includes checking for quality, removing any blemishes and packing into 1 lb. bags. The 1lb. bags are placed in 10 lb. boxes and moved straight into the appropriate coolers. Every employee or visitor that enters the facility is required to wear a face mask, hairnet and gloves. They also must step into an iodine bath to clean their shoes before entering. Once in the cooler our trucks back into the sealed doorways and load the product. The doors on the trucks are sealed and then depart for our warehouse in Vernon, California.
Warehouse When the product arrives at our warehouse it is inspected for condition and temperature. We also have temperature recorders on the trucks to show any variations that occurred during transit. The product is unloaded straight into one of our coolers. As orders are received on our proprietary software system, the size of the order is determined and the appropriate action is taken. For smaller orders product is brought into our packing cooler, removed from the master transport boxes, placed in 1 lb. cardboard boxes and then allocated to Styrofoam insulated shipping boxes designated for specific customers. This all takes place inside the packing cooler where the boxes remain until Fed Ex arrives to pick them up. For larger orders customers can either pick up the product at our warehouse or we can deliver the product using refrigerated trucks.
Shipping As you can see we remain in complete control of our product from the time it is planted in the ground to the time it arrives at your restaurant. We are the only grower-shipper that can provide this. We deal with our farms and that’s it! This allows unmatched control and traceability.
