How to Start the Analysis Module • To start the Analysis Module of the IDB Analyzer, select: Start > Programs > IEA > IDB Analyzer >Analysis Module

Calculating Percentages • Choose variable(s) to be analyzed • Load the SPSS Analysis File • Choose Percentages only as analysis type (some settings will be done automatically with respect to the datafile and the analysis method chosen) • Select Variables from the datafile to be analyzed as Grouping Variable • Define location and name of the Output Files • Start SPSS and run analysis

The Analysis File • The analysis file needs to be loaded from the respective directory • Countries in the example analysis file: • Austria • Belgium (Flemish) • Bulgaria • Denmark • England • Estonia • Finland
Percentages Only - Preparation • Select Analysis File:C:\ICCS2009\Work\ICG_ISG_INTC2.sav • Select Analysis Type: Percentages only • Select Grouping Variables:IS2P20A (Table 4.01 from ICCS2009 International report, first column) [IDCNTRY] (Pre-selected if more than one country is in file)

Percentages Only - Details • The IDB Analyzer creates SPSS Syntax and starts SPSS • In SPSS Syntax Editor Choose: Run > All
Percentages Only - Outcome • As a result the IDB Analyzer creates the following in the working directory (C:\ICCS2009\Work\): • SPSS Syntax file – contains the syntax with the commands (*.sps) • SPSS Data file – contains statistics from the analysis (*.sav) • MS Excel Output file – contains statistics from the analysis (*.xls)

Percentages Only - Excel Output Weighted percentage of students for the groups defined by the grouping variables (IDCNTRY, IS2P20A) Total student weight – population estimate of the groups defined by the grouping variables(IDCNTRY, IS2P20A)

Calculating Percentages and Means • Without Achievement Scores • Computes the percentages of students within specified subgroups, their mean and standard deviation on the continuous variable selected with their JRR standard errors • With Achievement Scores • Computes percentages and mean achievement scores based on plausible values with their JRR standard errors
Calculating Percentages and Means • Choose variable(s) to be analyzed • Load the SPSS Analysis File • Choose Percentages and Means as analysis type (some settings will be done automatically) • Select Variables from the datafile to be analyzed as Analysis Variable OR Select the plausible values as Achievement Scores • Define location and name of the Output Files • Start SPSS and run analysis
