Plot Summary • Beloved tells the story of slaves, Sethe, Baby Suggs, Paul D, and many others who escape from the Kentucky plantation known as Sweet Home. It describes the painful aftermath of slavery from a variety of perspectives. Part ghost story, part slave-narrative, the novel is hailed by many as one of the greatest works of literature of all time.

Dedication • The following dedication appears at the beginning of the novel: “Sixty Million and more” • References the estimated number of slaves who died during Atlantic slave trade.
