Biology is the study of life! 1. All living things are made up of cells, the basic unit of life. • Unicellular: an organism made up of a single cell that carries out all life functions. • Multicellular: an organism made up of 2 or more cells (usually billions of cells) that carries out life functions.
Life functions are those activities or functions carried out by all living things. They include… • Reproduction: making more of its own kind (sexual or asexual) • All living things are based on a UNIVERSAL genetic code. • Directions for building and functioning of a living thing are carried in the molecule DNA. This biology “language” is used for all of life! 4. Growth and development: get larger and/or a cycle of change; aging, metamorphosis (insects)
5. Obtain and use ENERGY: taking in selected material for energy source, (sunlight, carbohydrates…) • growth, develop, reproduction • Metabolism – combination of chemical reatcions: breaking down + building up 6. Response to environment - reacting to changes • Organisms live in constant change
Homeostasis: maintain constant conditions suitable for life • Examples: • Body temperature • % oxygen in blood • % salt in blood • % sugar in blood • Evolve – all living things change over time • Small changes can add up to BIG differences • Example: Breeds of dogs
