  1. THE BRAIN Parts that make the WHOLE. Working together to organize our movements, create our thoughts, form our emotions, and produce our behaviors.

  2. In the Beginning… • There was a tadpole that made a home with a wonderful companion, named Eggzilla… • The home was bare so, the tadpole and Eggzilla multiplied and created many cells. • Each cell was given a specific job, and the very first cells were given the most important job… • Creating the CNS • And if you believe this then God Bless. • But in what ways has man historically explained our brain’s involvement in behavior and why we’re different from animals? • What’s Phrenology?

  3. The First, is Behind… • The HINDBRAIN • If it was the first specific part of the brain, what do you think was involved? • How do you think we discovered that this part of the brain had a different function than the rest? • Accidents- way to study the brain by determining effect based on amount of damage and to which area it occurred. • EEG- electroencephalogram • Scans- CAT, MRI, PET, fMRI

  4. HINDBRAIN • Medulla makes a nice Medic. • Heart rate, blood pressure and breathing

  5. HINDBRAIN • Pons is Possibly pro-brain • Regulator of body movement, attention, sleep and alertness

  6. HINDBRAIN • Cerebellum, seriously, loves ballet • Balance and coordination

  7. HINDBRAIN

  8. Middle Midbrain • Reticular Activation System…give a kick to your…RAS. • Begins in hindbrain, assists Pons…and is extremely helpful with alertness and arousal

  9. MIDBRAIN

  10. MidBrain • Thalamus, this is Thally, please hold. • Relay Station, all sensory stimulation travels thru and is directed by the thalamus

  11. FOREBRAIN • The Limbic System loves You! • Very Emotional. Contains the amygdala and hippocampus • Amygdala is a bad ace. • Maintains emotion, rage. • Hippocampus, what? You’ve never seen a hippo on campus? • You probably would REMEMBER that. • Hypothalamus is hyper-sensitive to body-state • Regulates body, keeps on homeostasis and is our motivator if we are thirsty…etc

  12. FOREBRAIN • Cerebrum…aka Lobes. • Cerebral Cortex…aka Crust of the brain… • Humans are uniquely crusty
