  1. Divine Revelation

  2. God revealed Himself in words and deeds slowly to the people of Israel. This revelation was “imperfect and provisional.” • God fully reveals himself in the incarnation of the Son of God. • The fullness of this revelation of God was given to the Apostles = The Deposit of Faith

  3. How Did God Reveal Himself in the Old Testament • He spoke to select individuals (words) • He intervened and saved Abraham and his descendants (deeds) • The descendants of Abraham pondered, discussed, prayed, and were led by the Holy Spirit to understand these words and deeds.

  4. Scripture • This understanding of God’s action in their lives was “passed on” • Tradition literally means passed on. • Tradition = Teaching & Prayer • Finally, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit men began to write down their Tradition = Scripture

  5. “….God chose certain men who, all the while he employed them in this task, made full use of their own faculties and powers so that, though he acted in them and by them, it was as true authors that they consigned to writing whatever he wanted written, and no more.”

  6. By inspiring the writers God had Scripture written “faithfully, and without error teach that truth which God, for the sake of our salvation” wished to be written

  7. Canon of Scripture • It was by the apostolic Tradition that the Church discerned which writings are to be included in the list of the sacred books. • For the Old Testament the question was whether a particular writing was accepted by Jesus and the apostles to be part of the OT canon? Did they quote it? • For the New Testament the question was did a particular writing teach accurately what the Apostles taught and was it written by an apostle or his associates? Council of Hippo

  8. The Divine Revelation Jesus gave the Apostles = The Deposit of Faith • The teaching of the Apostles and the forms of prayers they handed down = Apostolic Tradition • Tradition = the life of the Church and includes doctrines and worship

  9. Interpretation • Apostolic Tradition or Apostolic Faith has a written form (Scripture) and an oral form (Tradition). Apostolic Faith is interpreted, preserved, expounded, and taught through the Successors of the Apostles. • Scripture came out of Tradition or the life of the Church. The OT from the faith life of the Israelites. The NT from the faith life of the Apostles. • “Sacred Scripture must be read and interpreted in the light of the same Spirit by whom it was written.” • In the faith of the community that created it.

  10. Magisterium or Teaching Office of Church • This Apostolic Tradition including the Scriptures must be interpreted within the faith life of the Church • This is done through the successors of the Apostles – the Pope and the bishops • When they teach, interpret, expound on this tradition they are acting as the magisterium

  11. Apostolic Authority: Matthew 28:18-20 • 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in[a] the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

  12. Apostolic Authority: Acts 1:15-26 • 15In those days Peter stood up 16and said, "Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus— 17he was one of our number and shared in this ministry." •  20"For," said Peter, "it is written in the book of Psalms,    " 'May his place be deserted;       let there be no one to dwell in it,'[b] and,    " 'May another take his place of leadership.'[c] 21Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22beginning from John's baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection." •  23So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen 25to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs." 26Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.

  13. Apostolic Authority: 1 Corinthians 11:23-26 •  23For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me." 25In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

  14. Apostolic Authority: John 20: 21-23 • 21Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." 22And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven."

  15. Apostolic Tradition & Succession2 Timothy 1:12-14  • 12That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day. •  13What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus. 14Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

  16. Apostolic Tradition & Succession Dionysius of Corinth "For from the beginning it has been your custom to do good to all the brethren in various ways and to send contributions to all the churches in every city. . . . This custom your blessed Bishop Soter has not only preserved, but is augmenting, by furnishing an abundance of supplies to the saints and by urging with consoling words, as a loving father his children, the brethren who are journeying" (Letter to Pope Soterin Eusebius, Church History 4:23:9 [A.D. 170]).

  17. Apostolic Tradition & Succession Cyprian of Carthage "[T]he Church is one, and as she is one, cannot be both within and without. For if she is with [the heretic] Novatian, she was not with [Pope] Cornelius. But if she was with Cornelius, who succeeded the bishop [of Rome], Fabian, by lawful ordination, and whom, beside the honor of the priesthood the Lord glorified also with martyrdom, Novatian is not in the Church; nor can he be reckoned as a bishop, who, succeeding to no one, and despising the evangelical and apostolic tradition, sprang from himself. For he who has not been ordained in the Church can neither have nor hold to the Church in any way" (Letters 69[75]:3 [A.D. 253]).
