USC School of Social WorkGlobal Immersion Programs • A unique opportunity for social work students to gain: • Exposure to social work practice in different locations and cultures in Europe; • Comparative perspectives on similar social issues and how they are approached differently outside of mainland United States; • New practice skills and techniques used with individuals and communities; • Informed view of social support systems in Europe at both the family and societal level; • Awareness of major policies and social service programs in a distinct region of the world; and • Four units of credit
USC School of Social WorkGlobal Immersion Programs A unique global immersion program in Europe designed to enhance participants’ understanding of the ways in which sexual orientation, gender and ethnicity intersect and interact with one another in European contexts. An opportunity to explore Europe in an intensive two- week immersion visit in the Netherlands that will and experimental consist of lectures with faculty and guest speakers, and reflective exercises and group-based assignments. An immersion that will include visits to social service, community and human rights organizations, as well as cultural excursions in the Netherlands.

USC School of Social WorkGlobal Immersion Programs What are the program formats? The three-week programs will take place in May and June 2011 and will be comprised of pre-departure sessions in Los Angeles followed by two weeks at the following locations: Pre-departure Sessions in Los Angeles May 23 and 25, 2011 Program in Europe June 10 - 25, 2011) Daily instruction will combine university faculty and guest speakers, discussion panels, and site visits to community organizations Visits to cultural sites and participation in special events Field excursions
USC School of Social WorkGlobal Immersion Programs Program Costs Tuition: $5,440 + Fees ($1,360 unit x 4 units – SOWK599) Program Fee:$1,850 + Transportation LAX to Amsterdam (Est. $900 - $1,200 round-trip) Program Fee includes: Lodging (double room occupancy, breakfast included), local transportation, weekday lunches, cultural activities, tours, and field visits. Other Fees include: Required health insurance if not enrolled in mandatory USC health insurance plan. Participants are also responsible for their own visas (if required) dinners, weekend lunches, snacks, non-program local transportation and other incidentals.
USC School of Social WorkGlobal Immersion Programs Application Process: Application and $250.00 non-refundable deposit are due at time of application. (Checks made out to the University of Southern California.) The sooner you apply, the better chance you will have in being accepted into the program of your choice. Program fee balance is due no later than Friday, April 22, 2011. Note: You must be enrolled in SOWK599in order to participate on the program. Financial Aid If you are receiving financial aid, you may also be able to use it toward international study. See the School’s Financial Aid Office.
USC School of Social WorkGlobal Immersion Programs Special note for 2nd year students who are scheduled to graduate in May. You will be able to take one of the three global immersion courses as your last elective. In doing so, you will be able to walk during the May commencement, but your degree will not be conferred until August 2011.
