What Is “Interest”? • judge by result • or by symptoms: attention is voluntary + learner is involved in doing the task + there is enjoyment • → exploring ways of increasing interest without much preparation: “tweaking” rather than creating.

Spelling: Why Rise in Interest? • Task involving clear, achievable goal with tangible result • Game-like challenge (task + “constraints” or “rules”) • Collaboration • Full participation • Success-orientation
Vocabulary What can we do to help learn these words?
Vocabulary We can ask learners to make a sentence contextualizing each word... ...or we can do any of the following: • Make a sentence contextualizing two words • Make a true sentence from a word • Make a false sentence from a word • Make a negative sentence • Make up a story including them all
Vocabulary: Why Rise in Interest? • Challenge through using higher-order thinking skills (cf. Bloom): • convergent: logical, critical • examples: connecting, prioritizing, classifying, identifying causality/lack of causality, evaluating truth/falsehook, identifying inclusion/exclusion, detecting contradicions or tautologies, identifying logical necessity • divergent: creative, “lateral” • creative: associations, solutions to a problem, answers to a question, questions to an answer • lateral: thinking of unusual or original solutions to problems, looking at things from an unconventional angle, “breaking rules”
Grammar: There Is / Are I You can “make sentences” about the picture... ...or you can: • achieve a set number of sentences (20/30) • say as many sentences as you can in limited time
