Introduction • FTP or file transfer protocol is a way to get files from across a network from one computer to another. Filezilla is an open source program that allows the setup of a FTP server on any Windows based computer. Filezilla server is available for download at filezilla-project.org. Filezilla server was released as a totally free and open-source option thus making FTP more accessible to end-users.
Procedure • 1. Go to Filezilla’s website where you can find the server file available for download. (filezilla-project.org) • 2. Click on download FileZilla Server.
3. Click on the link for FileZilla_Server-0_9_29.exe. • This will open your browser’s download window. Click Save File. Remember where you saved FileZilla to. • 4. Double click the FileZilla setup icon. • Setup will begin. This will take you to the GNU license agreement picturing in Figure 1.
5. Read the GNU license and then click “I agree.” • If you do not agree setup will not be able to continue. • 6. Click “Next” and select the Standard setup option.
6. Select the destination folder. • By default it will be installed in C:\Program Files\FileZilla Server
7. Click “Next.” • 8. Leave the default settings and click “Next.”
9. Once again leave the default settings on and then click “Install.” • Windows will open up a status bar showing the progress of the installation.
10. After the installtion completes press “Close” and you will see the window pictured below. • This window is the server interface window. It will show current server status.
11. Next click on the Edit button and then click on Users. The window pictured below will open. • 12. Click on add button below the users frame and create and user name. • 13. Check the password box and specify a password.
14. Click on the add button below the Shared Folders frame. • 15. Select which directories you’d like to access and click Ok • 16. Click Ok again.
Congratulations you have just made a basic FTP server for use within your home network!
