Introduction • Solar Energy comes from the sun. • Every minute the sun sends enough energy for an entire year! • This energy is renewable as long as the sun keeps shining
History • Solar power was first discovered in 1838 by Edmund Becquerel but he did not get the credit • From 1860-1881 AugusteMouchout was the first man to get a patent for a running motor that was powered by the sun
Found and Recovered • Solar energy is found in the sun • The energy is recovered through the process when: • The sun hits the flat plate, focusing, and passive collectors • The electric currents go into the change controller • After that the energy goes into a battery system and becomes DC power • Finally it goes to the inverter and changes to AC power http://www.sadoun.com/solar/index.htm
Stored & Released • Thermal Mass Systems store energy in the form of heat, at the correct temperature • Fans and pumps distribute the heat http://www.berg-group.com/ThermalMassAirDryer_files%5CCompressedAirDryer25000CFM.jpg
Modern Use • Now scientists have found many uses for solar energy including • Satellites • TV’s • Telephones • Weather • Internet • Heating • Boats • Ext. http://newtech.aurum3.com/hdtv/philips-cinema-219-lcd-tv/ http://www.dasolar.com/images/content/solar-boat-solarsailor.jpg
http://solarpanels-foryourhome.com/images/SolarPanel.jpg Pros & Cons Pros Cons • Solar energy is free after you install the panel • no fuel or waste products • No energy bill • renewable • No carbon emissions or green house gases • Doesn’t work at night • Expensive to install solar panels • Unreliable if not in sunny area
Future • Making new inventions powered by solar power
