  1. Smart Trucks, Smart Drivers & Clean Fuels EP 26 November 2013 Michael NielsenGeneral Delegate (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2013

  2. IRU Membership 2013: 170 Members in 73 countries 2013: 170 Members in 73 countries 1948: eight founder countries 2013: 20 CRIPA Members (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2013

  3. Smart Trucks (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2013

  4. Innovations continue – immediate possibilities! Right choice of tyres Tyre pressure monitoring Alignment of axles Improved engine technology Dynamic route planning Fleet management & Navigation Adaptive cruise control Measure & control driving style Increase loading capacity Improved Aerodynamics (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2013

  5. Allow Innovation Weight & Dimensions Allow for longer and heavier vehicle combinations for: Improved aerodynamics and safety for the entire vehicle combination – tractor and trailer ! Increased load capacity ! Efficiency gains e.g. through the use of EMS in pan-European operations • Reduction in number of trips by 32% • Reduction of fuel consumption by 15% • Reduction of CO2emission by 15% Innovation should be encouraged Railways want to stop innovation in road transport – why? (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2013

  6. Smart Drivers – train & award Competence Compliance Safety Recognition Awareness (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2013

  7. Smart Drivers – train and inform Improved information Use dynamic traffic information and route guidance to guide and steer (also EMC) traffic Better planning Ensure dynamic and live updates of all situations to ensure full utilisation of infrastructure, including the provision of dynamic parking information and optimised vehicle capacity. Improved driving style Encourage Eco-driving training and incentivise transport operators to invest in such systems. (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2013

  8. Clean driving Intensify work on finding alternatives to oil for HGVs. Incentivise the use of these alternatives directly for transport operators – e.g. by providing weight exemptions. Test new concepts and innovate. (c) International Road Transport Union (IRU) 2013
