3.2.2 Effects on contemporary relationships caused by. Different technologies.
E N D
Different technologies The way you view the environment and the causes which determine your relationship with the environment are seen through the use of new technologies developing everyday. Without new technologies people would resist wanting to go out and enjoy the outdoors by going camping or hiking or taking part in other recreational activities. Advanced technology has allowed people to spend more time in the outdoors whether it be that they have thicker, more waterproof clothes to keep the dry and warm from the changes in the weather or it be new technology which allows people to be safer in the outdoors from an advancement in life jackets to an advance in compasses and GPS’s. The advance in technologies has opened up many more opportunities of the land being used as a gymnasium for people. Technology has improved navigation systems which allows people to further explore the environment without the fear of getting lost and not knowing where they are, equipment such as climbing and canoeing which has been improved greatly by making equipment lighter, safer, improving rescue techniques and insulating different parts of the equipment to ensure warmth and durability.
Commercialisation • Commercialisation allows people to take part in outdoor activities with ease due to there being many opportunities out there. These include tours and packages, this allows anyone experienced or inexperienced to take part in activities they may or may not have ever tried before. They are able to feel safe while taking part in these activities due to there being someone who is knowledgeable about the activity being there to help at all times. The increase of guidebooks allows people to research the activity the wish to take part in before they commit to anything. Guidebooks provide all the information needed before anyone goes into the environment to use it as the gymnasium it is perceived to be. The marketing of outdoor equipment increases the expression of interest people are taking to the outdoors. Marketing of new and improved equipment allows people to buy equipment best suited to them and the activities they plan to take part in. The increase of commercialisation has taken a large impact on the environment due to land needing to be cleared to allow for infrastructure to be built, this has led to a decrease in flora and fauna.
Portrayals of outdoor events and experiences • Outdoor experiences and environments can be portrayed in the Media, Music, Art, Writing and Advertising. We view the environment the way that it is being portrayed. If the environment is being portrayed as a harsh hostile place it is going to reduce the amount of people who will want to visit and take part in outdoor activities, where if the environment is portrayed as a beautiful place where you can take part in outdoor activities safely, more people will want to visit those areas. If the land is portrayed to be an uneasy harmful place more and more people will want to find ways to look after the environment until it becomes a place they can go relax and enjoy themselves.
Social Reponses to Risk Taking • People respond to risk taking in various ways. If the media is to express that one thing or another is dangerous and people should not take part, most people won’t. There are however a few people who enjoy the thrill of taking part in outdoor activities which not necessarily will hurt them but will give them the boost of adrenaline they are looking for. If people view somebody getting hurt taking part in a high risk activity it may cause them to not wish to participate in activities that relate to the environment, this meaning the environment will be used less as a resource.
Social and Political Discourses to environmental issues • Climate change, water management, biosecurity and other environmental issues have a major impact on the way people perceive the land. They have changed the way we do activities as well as stopping us completely from taking part in activities. These issues have urged people to want to visit these areas so that they can help make a difference. By visiting these threatened areas people are left to create a strong relationship with these parts of the land. These issues have made people want to become involved in protecting the environment as much as they can.
