    9. GICED The House of Garwares was founded by the dynamic visionary, Late Padmabushan Balchandra Digamber alias Abasaheb Garware. The GICED is his brain-child as much as that of the university, signifying the joint venture of education and industry. It was in 1981 during the University of Mumbai’s post-centennial silver jubilee celebrations that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ram Joshi, approached the House of Garware for financial support to new educational ventures. The University and the Garware Foundation examined several proposals and proposed the establishment of an Institute wholly devoted to the promotion of career education. Affirming its interest the Garware Foundation signed an agreement with the University for support in establishing such an Institute. That gave birth to GICED as a unique institute of university bringing industry-education venture for  major  diversification  programme  in  higher  education. Thus, the Institute was founded on Saturday, 27th October, 1984 and inaugurated by Hon. Shri. Y.V. Chandrachud, Chief Justice of India. The regular diploma courses started in August 1985.

This Institute boasts of an excellent lab facility where our students are trained on various aspects of gemology and Jewellery. Library facility which has wide range of books related to jewellery is also available to them for research. IIJ endeavors to ensure that it remains a market leader in its segment and remains abreast on the latest developments in the Gems & Jewellery industry. Their research and services are continuously rendered to the industry and to the students community.

    14. I wish the second batch of our students from the Gem and Jewellery management course all success in the career they have chosen. Ever since its inception 25 years ago, the Garware Institute has tried to infuse managerial skills into its vocational programmes. Particularly at the post graduate level as the students were being trained for managerial positions. Thus a student of a career course got an opportunity to study the core areas of management- marketing, finance, HR, etc along with an exposure to the role that IT and Quality played in integrating the organization. This has paid rich dividends. It has helped the student to view business operations as a whole rather than as the sum of its parts and to progress smoothly from functional skills to general management positions. In most courses our students have, after completion, either risen to senior management positions or become successful entrepreneurs. I would naturally foresee similar progress in this course which has been designed carefully in consultation with industry and management experts. Additionally, a distinctive feature of this course is partnership with industrial units for practical training. We have moved, significantly, from industry alliances to industry partnership to bridge any gap that might have existed between industry expectations and our offerings. I am confident that this batch will do us and the industry proud. K C R Raja Member, Management Committee. GICED

    15. Garware Institute is an eminent career institute which runs courses in the field of non-established vocational areas and blends with management perceptions. In addition to that endeavor a new dimension was added by collaborating with private professional training institute to conduct practicals in advanced technology. Since GICED & IIJ commenced training in Jewellery Management last year, it has been very well received by the industry as well as by students. The feed-back from both these has been very encouraging and I am sure there is tremendous scope for the students to find job opportunities or work in their own businesses by getting this training. We are about to launch our 2nd batch of trainees through this placement brochure. We expect to get good response and support from the industry and offer them good opportunities for placement. These young, dynamic, trained professionals will be an asset to any organization they work for. With regards . Professor Rambhau M. Badode. I/C Director

    16. The Post Graduate Diploma in Jewellery Management (PGDJM) introduced by University of Mumbai Garware Institute of Career Education in technical collaboration with the Indian Institute of Jewellery is a unique innovation in the arena of education . It is a fast track one year MBA program with a special expertise in jewellery . The graduates of this program will be new steer leaders in heralding professionalism into the Jewellery Industry.   We in India are currently obsessed with creating a mass of MBA’s who are generalists with a specialization in Marketing or Finance at the most and a few numbers in Human Resources. These students do not have any knowledge of the industry, they join and most often spend a minimum of two years learning the nuts and bolts of that specific industry.  The PGDJM students will therefore be a refreshing change. For they, like all other management students learn the basics of Marketing and Finance but with a difference, for all their projects and case studies are focused on the jewellery industry. Alongside they study the nuts and bolts of jewellery making by actually sitting on the bench , designing on the drawing board  and with CAD , studying gemology and then finally designing and manufacturing a piece of jewellery. .  I believe the students graduating from this program will be a huge asset to their future employers and I wish the students of the second batch of PGDJM course (2010-11) all the success they deserve.   Renu Kapoor Director  Indian Institute of Jewellery

    17. DJM is a unique programme designed & planned by Mumbai University’s Garware Institute as Gems & Jewellery Industry is emerging very fast and needs trained professionals to handle issues of globalization and increased customer awareness and demands. Traditionally Indians view Jewellery as integral part of lifestyle, rituals, investment and fashion/status statement. The major trends that have developed show wide variety ranging from old traditional designs to new fusion, ethnic and urban in style. This course is unique combination of technical design/fabrication skills taught along with management approach covering the latest aspects of technology and management paradigm which are specific to entire sector. Now that we are in the second year of training we have more positive news for the industry. This year we conducted a seminar “Importance of Communication Skills in Gems & Jewellery Industry”. We are proud to announce that 2 speakers in this seminar were our past students who are running their own businesses . They elaborated very effectively the co-relation between the course and the actual business environment. Course Co-ordinator Mrs. Jyotsna Patwardhan GICED

    19. Ex-Students “Though from a jeweller’s family, I joined this course as I wanted to gain a thorough professional knowledge about this industry before I could join my father in his jewellery business. This course has taught me everything I needed to know about the industry right from designing to manufacturing your own jewellery to gemmology to stock inventory to keeping and maintaining account books to marketing. I have tried to inculcate whatever I have learnt into my business. I take care of what has to go as window display for the season or sometimes even for the day. I take care of stocks and maintain a log for the same. It gives me great pride when today my father being in this business for years take my input and asks me ideas for promotion. I thank the faculty of this course to have made me capable to do so.”

    20. Ex-Students “My family has been in the jewellery business for years so it was just obvious for me to join them. I have been exposed to the business right from the time I completed my school. I remember I would go and sit at the office during vacations or even after college ended for the day. My job was to run odd errands and watch others close sales. When I heard about this course, I got extremely interested in joining because of its unique and interesting combination of giving equal weightage to both, various aspects of jewellery business as well as management. Equipped with what I learnt in this course I continuously strive to formalise my business by maintaining proper books of sales, accounts, stocks and all. This course made me realise the importance of technology so today at my office everything is computerised, lessening human efforts and errors. We have today adapted modern techniques used worldwide rather than the age old tradition. My best wishes to the next batch raring to join this industry.”

    21. Jewellery Overview One of the biggest markets for Gems and Jewellery is in India and adjoining countries. Personal possession of gold is considered as an important item of wealth in Indian families. New Light gold Jewellery - modern and trendy is now emerging in traditional market where retailers and designers offer a limited choice to the customers until presently. New retail outlets are multiplying. The traditional ‘family owned’ houses are rapidly changing to professional marketers. The exports are growing year after year. The business will therefore need more and more skilled hands to coordinate the efforts between manufacturers, ‘Designers’, ‘Karigars’ and retailers to offer the customers what they want today. Mumbai University’s Post graduate Diploma in Jewellery Management course fills in the need for trained professional and skilled personnel who will navigate the industry to commanding heights. A thorough orientation in management, marketing, finance and human resource, information technology, and international marketing at Mumbai University’s Garware Institute of Career Education & Development and an exposure to Design, Manufacture, Fabrication, Quality control at Indian Institute of Jewellery, coupled with project work in merchandizing and supply chain, ideally prepares the participants to function as Trainees, Executives and Managers in this growing industry. Mumbai University’s programme has full support of Gems & Jewellery Export Promotion Council and Gems & Jewellery Federation for an intensive training and placement.

The JEWELLERY we have made are bracelet, rings, pendants, earrings etc. In Casting jewellery, procedures from mould making to burnout cycle all the steps are part of the curriculum and performed individually. The technique of estimating jewellery weight just by observing the design and recovering the maximum loss of metal during the jewellery making process is a skill developed.

    24. Manual Design The MANUAL DESIGNING curriculum covers the methods of drawing, rendering, representation, as well as technical details in manufacturing of their final jewellery piece in accordance with industry norms. Research on international Jewellery markets like France, Italy, USA, India, Middle east etc and their designs as assignments and presentations Rendering and presentation includes: Representation of diamonds, color stones – both faceted and cabochons. 26. CAD/CAM Training CAD stands for computer-aided design. Architects, drafters, engineers, and artists use CAD software to create plans and construction drawings. Training in CAD is also very important as the whole jewellery industry is shifting from manual designing to computer designing. CAD is more efficient because the software records lines as vectors based on mathematical equations. Portions of a drawing can be twisted, stretched, or moved. Popular CAD programs used by jewelers includes, Digital GoldSmith (2D). Rhinoceros (3D). MatrixVI (3D specifically designed and developed for making any kind of jewellery design).

    27. CAM stands for computer-aided-manufacturing Commonly used CAM machines in jewellery (Also known as Rapid Prototype system). This systems is mainly divided in two types that is Additive Rapid Prototyping Sometimes called 3D printing. Stereo Lithography (SLA) or Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). Subtractive Rapid Prototyping Also known as CNC Milling We have used the Subtractive Rapid Prototyping for our final project CAD/CAM Training

    28. Gemology The Gemology Module for PGDJM has been designed to empower the student for the Gem and Jewellery Industry with knowledge of Gems and Diamonds and its application as a management level decision maker. The knowledge of gemology gained ranges from Mines to Market. To create a strong base in gemology is very important and this is Purchasing gems and jewelry can be a magical experience, filled with excitement and anticipation. But lack of information, error, or misrepresentation can make the thrill of buying or selling a gem or piece of jewelry confusing, intimidating, and costly. The topic coverage is vast and varied ranging from – 4C’s of a diamond [colour, clarity, cut, and carat weight] Presentations Historically Famous gems Qualities that define a gem- 4Cs of a gemstone [colour, clarity, cut and carat weight] Identification of cubic zirconia, moissanite and natural diamonds Different styles of fashioning a gem Properties of a gem that aid in differentiation Factors to be considered while setting gemstone in a jewellery piece Gems used in Fashion jewellery & Sight Identification Standard gem testing instruments that aid in differentiating gems Synthetic/ Man- made gemstones Gem enhancements and treatments Commercially important gemstones and their imitations
