IEEE RURAL ELECTRIC POWER CONFERENCE FT. COLLINS, COLORADOAPRIL 28, 2009 Application of Series Air-Core Inductors to Distribution CapacitorBanks Improves Reliability Alan Hannah –AEP SWEPCO
BACKGROUND • Standard Distribution Banks ,When Switched , Can Cause Ringing On Distribution Network • Back –To-Back Capacitor Switching Can Cause Circuit To Resonate in The 400 Hz Range -Theoretical Over Voltages Up To 2.0 P.U. • Engineer at Sister OPCO- Insert Permanent Small Inductance On Capacitor Bank-To Shift Ring Frequency • Inductors Are Fabricated in Utility Transformer Repair Shop
CIRCUIT THEORY C =kvar x1000 2∏ f(kv)2 where C = 20.4 microfarads FOR 1200 KVAR -7.2 KV UNIT
THE AIR CORE INDUCTOR • CALCULATED VALUE = 72.78 MICROHENRIES VS. • MEASURED VALUE = 69.7 MICROHENRIES
f o = ? KHz for 1 Capacitor without Choke Coil * f o = 4.2 KHz for 1 Capacitor with Choke Coil fo= 3.0 KHz for 2 CAPACITORS with Choke Coil * Neglecting Source Inductance
WHY ADD INDUCTORS TO SHUNT CAPACITORS? • ENHANCED POWER QUALITY DURING CAPACITOR SWITCHING • ABILITY TO PLACE SWITCHED CAPACITORS CLOSE TO ONE ANOTHER IN TIGHT DISTRIBUTION CORRIDORS • LIMITS CAPACITOR CHARGING CURRENT & IMPROVES SAFETY
SWEPCO CAPACITORS • Approx. 300 Capacitors in 2 Divisions • 90 % Are 7.2/12.47 KV, 1200KVAR Units • Other 10 % Are 13.2 KV & 34.5 KV W/ Some 600KVAR Units • 99% of Capacitors are Gr. Wye • 85 % Of Capacitors Are Switched • 70 % Of Banks Are On Shielded Circuits • All New Banks Fitted With Choke Coils
BACK-TO-BACKSWITCHING EXAMPLE#1 SOUTH FAYETTEVILLE SUBSTATION
EXAMPLE-S.E. FAY CKT 965640 • HEAVY INDUSTRIAL CORRIDOR • MW OF PEAK LOAD • TOTAL OF 4800 KVAR OF SWITCHED CAPACITORS • SUSTATION PEAK SHORT CIRCUIT- AMPS • 1033 AL. SHIELDED WIRE • 2-1200KVAR BANKS ON WEST LATERAL- 1 SPAN APART
BACK-TO-BACKSWITCHING EXAMPLE# 2 FAYETTEVILLE SUB
ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS • REACTIVE POWER CONSUMPTION= 81 VAR • REAL POWER CONSUMPTION = 37 WATTS • DIELECTRIC STRESSES = 3.8 VOLTS
ACCOUNTING TREATMENT • CHOKE COILS ARE TREATED AS O&M • REDUCES BLOWN FUSES-O&M • AVOIDS BLOWN CAPACITOR CELLS –CAPITAL REPLACEMENT
OTHER PHYSICAL CONSIDERATIONS • WEIGHT OF CHOKE COIL-9 LBS • ARRESTER LOCATION • RELOCATE TO SWITCH ARM • ICE LOADING
