  3. Laws Governing Driver Licenses 1. YOU MUST carry a valid driver license, a valid provisional license or a validated New Jersey permit • AND valid insurance and vehicle registration cards. 4. Address change- 1 week after moving 5. Name change- within 2 weeks 6. If you move to NJ and have an out-of-state license you must apply for a NJ license within 60 days DRIVING IS A PRIVILEDGE, NOT A RIGHT. Page 6

Graduated Drivers License (GDL) Program GDL- is a multi-stage driver licensing program that gradually introduces driving privileges to first-time drivers, extends their practice driving time and requires a minimum age of 18 in order to receive an unrestricted, basic driver license. GDL restrictions placed upon first-time drivers must be strictly adhered to. Failure to do so may result in a fine of $100 or a possible suspension of a motorist’s driving privilege. 3 Choices: • Early Bird Road (16) • The Young Adult Road (17) • The Adult Road (21) Page 16

The Early Bird Road STEP 1- Get a Special Learners Permit (16) • Driving School • MVC Knowledge and Vision Test STEP 2- Practice with an Adult Driver (6 months) STEP 3- Get a Provisional License (17) • Road Test STEP 4- With a Provisional License (1 year) STEP 5- Get Basic Drivers License (18) Page 17

  6. Special Learners Permit Restrictions (16) • NO driving between 11:01pm- 5:00am • NO cell phones • Supervising driver: • in front seat • at least 21 • have 3 years of driving experience • Passengers: • from household • plus 1 • SEATBELTS Page 20

Follow the Rules! • Failure to follow GDL restrictions: • may result in a fine of $100 • or a possible suspension of a motorist’s driving privilege. • If the student driver commits a traffic offense, responsibility will be with both the student and instructor or adult supervising driver. Your License • Basic Divers License- Class D • Valid for 4 Years • Under 21- Vertical, Over 21- Horizontal • Getting a drivers license illegally may result in- • Fine of $200-$500 • And/or imprisonment 30-90 days • Altering a drivers license, or showing an altered driver license, may result in- • Fine of up to $1,000 • Up to 6 months imprisonment • Loss of driving privilege Page 8
