Community College Administrators as Educational Partnership Champions: Phenomenological Perspectives A Presentation by: George Boodrookas, Ed.D. Northern California Educational Leadership Research Symposium February 15, 2014 Burk Hall, San Francisco State University
Statement of the Problem • Public Policy Institute, March, 2013 • It is incumbent upon both the community colleges and the state to find creative ways to generate revenue and create efficiencies that will enable the colleges to meet their basic mission—providing skilled workers who can effectively participate in California’s vibrant and dynamic economy” (p.34). • Partnership is a requirement to meet this mission • Partnership requires the work of champions (Amey, 2010; Amey, Eddy & Campbell, 2010; Amey, Eddy & Ozaki, 2007; Eddy, 2010) • Certain conditions must be present for these champions to emerge and for their efforts to have positive outcomes (Levin, 2009) • Research is limited on these conditions (Levin, 2009) Northern CA Educational Leadership Research Symposium

Purpose of this Phenomenological Study • New perspectives on individual agency and its influence on multi-party partnerships • Through the study of lived experience: • The self-reported experiences of champions • Personal and social characteristics and influences of champions in relation to partnerships • Lessons learned by champions • Recommendations by champions for future champions Northern CA Educational Leadership Research Symposium
Primary Research Question • What is the retrospective assessment of factors influencing entrepreneurial community college champions in the development and implementation of educational partnerships? Northern CA Educational Leadership Research Symposium
Research Sub-Questions • How do partnership champions describe, comprehend, and interpret the experiences related to the partnership development and implementation process? • And, more specifically: • What are the self-described roles and characteristics of partnership champions? • What influences and experiences do champions view as important in shaping the partnership? • What social capital do champions bring to the partnership table and how do these champions influence the partnership in which they engage? • How do these champions describe any pivotal moments, lessons learned, or significant motivations leading toward their engagement in educational partnerships? • What do champions offer as suggestions for action to future champions?
