West Virginia Department of Transportation Transportation Symbology Standardization Brandie Yalniz, MS, GIS Programmer Analyst I June 9, 2010 Geospatial Transportation Information Section
Introduction • WVDOT Past Standards • Current Standards • Research • Future Standards • Limiting Factors • Challenges • Considerations
Historic Standards at WVDOT • 1963 US Department of Commerce – Bureau of Public Roads • 1973 US Department of Transportation Federal Highway Administration • 1979 Mapping Supervisor’s Manual
Present Standards at the WVDOT • CAD & MicroStation adhere to the 1973 Standards as a guide • GIS Standards None
Past & Current Research in GIS Transportation Symbology • Research • Other State DOTs • Independent Trials
Where do we go from here? • Limitations & Challenges • Considerations
Limitations & Challenges • Many people are used to the old standards. • Surface Types are sometimes divided between two symbols in the current MicroStation Maps. • Different standards are needed for the different product types & Scales. • The attributes collected dictate the symbology chosen.
Considerations • Some Surface Types are split into different categories in the original MicroStation maps • National Standards may not be in the near future • Any standards implemented will be changed if National Standards are created
Future Plan • Combine: • National Standards • Historic Standards • Other State DOT Standards • Testing • Engineers & other users • Different Platforms • Different Software Packages • Reevaluate & Retest • Implement
What about you? • Do you think about symbology standards? • Do you need them? • Would they be/are they organizational, statewide, or national? • Do you already have standards? • What are some of the challenges you have • Encountered? • Overcome?
