Overview • Basic approach and Scope of the EAMG • Key Distinctions • EAMG Outline Structure • Outline Chapter Highlights • Next Steps for Outline Development • Questions and Comments aeajournal.org
Basic Approach to Develop the Outline • Collected 19 outlines from EA books, courses, documents, and team member input. There are more than 1,400 rows in total. • A consolidated structure based on the collections was developed. • The rows in the outline collections were mapped to the consolidated outline to ensure all EA aspects can be covered in the consolidated outline. aeajournal.org
Scope of the EAMG in the EA Management Reference System* Scope of this Project EA Management Guide High level summary EA Handbook Focused explanation By subject area or industry EA Handbook EA Handbook EA Standards Technical specifications from all sources EA Standards EA Standards References: supporting and source materials *System: A group of independent but interrelated elements comprising a unified whole. aeajournal.org
The EA Management Reference System Explanation: • The System of the EA Management References comprises four types of components: the Guide, EA Handbooks, EA Standards, and Source Materials. • The EA Management Guide provides a high level summary of enterprise architecture knowledge and approaches. This is the scope of this project. • EA Handbooks to be developed in the future will provide detailed explanation for a specific area, such as “A Handbook for Security Architecture”, or an industry, such as “A Handbook for Applying Enterprise Architecture in the Transportation Industry”. Handbooks supplement the EA Management Guide. • EA Standards to be identified from external standards or developed by a|EA will provide technical specifications. Handbooks and the Guide will refer to Standards for specifications. • All three levels of components may refer to source materials such as a book or a journal article. aeajournal.org
Key Distinctions • The EAMG Outline makes two basic distinctions: • Distinguish an architecture from the documentation of the architecture. • Distinguish the goal, improving the actual architecture, from the means, producing good architectural documentations and blueprints. aeajournal.org
Key Distinctions An “Architecture” in the Outline refers to an actual structure. This is the documentation or blueprint of the architecture, but not the architecture itself. aeajournal.org
Key Distinctions The goal of EA management is to improve the actual structure. Developing good documentations and blueprints is the means to achieving the EA Management goal. aeajournal.org

The Logical Flow of the EAMG Outline • Concepts and Terminology: Establish concepts, terms, definitions, a common language, and a basic understanding of the EA discipline. • Principles and Patterns: Identify what is a good architecture and what are the good ways to reach the good architecture. • Processes and Techniques: Specify the standard processes and approaches for architecting an enterprise’s structure. • Program Management: Build a high quality EA program to carry out the EA mission. • Problem Solving: Apply the EA discipline to solve common types of real world problems. aeajournal.org
