  1. STEMify Your Classroom ITEEA 2010 Conference Presented by Ron Pundt, STEM Educator

  2. Introduction Ron Pundt, STEM Educator • 3rd year as HS Engineering Educator at NEISD STEM RAM Academy, San Antonio, TX • 11th year teaching Career and Technology • 20 years in Construction Management • Degree in Building Construction (Architectural Engineering) from Texas A&M University in 1978

  3. T-STEM Initiative • Program administered through the Texas High School Project (THSP) • Grant funded through public/private partnerships • T-STEM Network • 51 T-STEM academies • 7 T-STEM centers

  4. R.A.M. STEM Academy at Lee High School • 6 – 12 grade • School within a school • 100 students per grade level • 3rd year

  5. What is Integrative STEM Education? "Integrative STEM Education" refers to technological/engineering design-based learning approaches that intentionally integrate content and process of science and/or mathematics education with content and process of technology and/or engineering education. Integrative STEM education may be enhanced through further integration with other school subjects, such as language arts, social studies, art, etc.“  Source: Sanders, M. & Wells, J. (February 12, 2010). Integrative STEM education. Paper presented at the Virginia Department of Education Webinar, Integrative STEM/Service-learning, year 1

  6. Future City 2009-2010 Engineering Challenge • ID Personnel involved • Technology education teacher • Mathematics teacher • Science teacher • Language arts teacher • ID primary standards • Technology education standards to address • ID potential cross-curricular links • How can the project be integrated across disciplines?

  7. Future City 2009-2010 Engineering Challenge • Develop entry document/event • How will the project be introduced? Content trailer? Competition? • ID major products • Computer model using SimCity software • Physical model using recycled materials • Research essay • Oral presentation

  8. Future City 2009-2010 Engineering Challenge • Create rubrics for major products • Use/build from rubrics provided in competition handbook • Create storyboard for project implementation • Map the project to a calendar for all classrooms involved • Add lesson details • Each teacher adds instructional details and lessons as needed.

  9. Lessons Learned • Collaborating with other teachers requires administrative support • Being a “lone ranger” in integrative education is a challenge • Competition experience was “eye opening” and enhanced the rigor of the project and the student learning • Use of community mentors enhances the experience • It’s worth the effort

  10. “Green” Greenhouse Project • Driving question (challenge statement) • “Create an affordable, automated greenhouse to produce culinary herbs with a minimum of human interaction and carbon footprint.”

  11. “Green” Greenhouse Project • Describe the project idea • re-task a dust collector tower into a greenhouse structure • Provide automated temperature control • Provide an automated watering system based on moisture sensor data • Provide a sustainable energy source with backup power • Provide a security system • Produce organic liquid fertilizer • Document the project

  12. STEMify Your Classroom • To STEMify your classroom, look for opportunities to implement Integrative STEM education practices and teach beyond 2 x 4 education • Reach out to and collaborate with core content teachers - help provide the context through design for math/science learningto occur
