What Is the Problem? • In today's society innocent people are dying due to the gang violence within the community.
Bills Being Modified • H.R.928 : National Safe Streets Gang Crime Prevention Act of 2011
The Goal • Our goal is to modify the H.R.928 : National Safe Streets Gang Crime Prevention Act of 2011 • We are proposing that instead of giving the minors community service hours, that you charge them as adults. • This is a better way to enforce the rules and a way to show minors the seriousness of there actions. • By modifying the bill we hope that more authorities will enforce the laws, and people will think about the consequences before committing a crime.
Facts: • Proven facts show that in the last ten years 5,750 people in Los Angeles County killed due to gang violence. • 80,000 members alone are in a gang. • In the summer of 2010 (Chicago), 57 people died of gang related violence,52 of the deaths were in one weekend.
How it effects the Community? • It has effected us personally because we lose family, friends, and neighbors to shootings. • 3 in 4 deaths in the city of Chicago are gang related. • Innocent bisectors are dying.
Who it Effects? • Community: Most citizens are afraid to even walk our their front doors, or sit on their porch, because of the gang violence in their community. • Adults: Many adults are afraid of loosing their children every single day to gang violence. • Youth: In most cases the gang violence that is happening in our community is coming from the inner youth. So its easier for youth to get involved in gang activity.
How Has It Effected Us Personally? • This affects me personal when I lost a close friend Na’Kella Harper, due to a gang related attack on her graduation party.-DeAndrea • Also a Proviso East Freshman was killed in her own living room sleeping, when a man was shot and lost control of his car. He went crashing through the young girls window killing her and injuring her younger brother due to a gang war in Maywood, IL.-DeAndrea • My cousin was with friends when he was shot and killed on a Saturday night after leaving a party because he refused to join a gang. Innocent children are being killed, precious lives are being taken every single day. Something serious has to be done or none of the violence will be stopped. Laws and consequences have to be put into effect. Even doing the right thing isn't enough in today's society.-DeAndrea
