  2. Act I Scene 1 • Background: The Castle Elsinore in Denmark in winter time. 1.The scene opens at the battlements. The soldier, Barnardo, invites Horatio and Marcellus to see the apparition. 2.The ghost which is like the previous king appears as Barnardo retells what he saw before.

  3. 3. The ghost doesn’t stop although Horatio calls it. 4. Horatio thinks its appearance has some symbols. 5. Thus,Horatio decides to tell his friend, Prince Hamlet.

Act I Scene2 1.The scene opens in the palace. 2.The new crowned king who is old king’s brother explains why he remarried the queen. 3.The reason is the encroaching Danish army. 4.He dispatches Voltemand and Cornelius to prevent the war. 5.Then the king agrees Laertes to return to school in France.

  5. 6.Then he turns to Prince Hamlet to ask him cease the grief and stay in the kingdom. 7.Hamlet can’t hide his grief because the remarriage of his mother. However, he still agrees to stay. 8.After the leaving of others, Horatio, Marcellus and Barnardo enter to meet Hamlet and tells him what they saw. 9. Hamlet agrees to see it.

  6. Act I Scene3 1.The scene opens in Polonius’s chambers. 2.His son, Laertes, advise his sister, Ophelia to spurn her suitor, Prince Hamlet. 3.Then Polonius enters to give lots of advice to Laertes.

  7. 4.After the leave of Laertes, Polonius asks Ophelia what they discussed. 5.Ophelia tells him. Polonius hates and scolds Hamlet and asks her spurn him, too. 6. Ophelia promises to obey her father’s advice.

  8. Act I Scene4 1.At the night, Hamlet meets his friends on the battlements of the castle. 2.At the same time, there is a celebration in the castle. It makes Hamlet criticize it. 3. Then the ghost appears and Hamlet immediately identifies the apparition as his father. 4. Although his friends ask him not to go, he still follows the spirit into the night.

ActI Scene5 1.The ghost tells Hamlet he is the spirit of King Hamlet. 2.Also he tells his son that he was killed by his uncle, Claudius. 3.He asks Hamlet to revenge for him but leave Gertrude alone. 4.After the ghost leaves, Hamlet goes back and asks his friends to keep secrets. 5.He tells Horatio that he’ll pretend to be mad to spy on his uncle and mother.

  11. Polonius asks his servant Reynaldo to spy on his son, Laertes in Paris. Reynaldo leaves. Ophelia enters and tells her father that she was horrified by Hamlet’s strange behavior. Polonius believes that Hamlet loses his mind because of the standoff of her daughter, Ophelia. Act II Scene 1

  12. Act II Scene 2 • King Claudius and the Queen ask two of Hamlet’s friends to spy on Hamlet and promise them a handsome compensation. • Here comes the news from Norway. The king of Norway asks the king of Denmark provide some assistance to fight against Poland.

  13. Again comes Polonius the news of Hamlet. He tells the king and queen that Hamlet becomes weird because he can’t have the love of Ophelia with a letter as an evidence. • Hamlet knows that they are sent here by the king.

  14. A group of players arrive. Hamlet asks the players to perform “The murder of Gonzago” with sixteen extra lines added by Hamlet, and the players agree. With the play, Hamlet can proof if the ghost is real or not.

  15. Act III Scene 1 • The friends report the short talk to the king and queen. • Polonius and Claudius hide behind an arras to eavesdrop the conversation between Ophelia and Hamlet. • Hamlet enters with “To be or not to be.” soliloquy. • He tells Ophelia that she would be better off in a nunnery.

  16. Ophelia lies to Hamlet that his father is at home, and Hamlet cursed her, asking her to go to a nunnery again. He also says that women are two faced and can not be trusted. Then he leaves. • The king are not convinced that Hamlet is ruined by love. • The king will send Hamlet to England.

  17. Act III Scene 2 • Hamlet meet with the players and instructs them how to act properly. • He tells Horatio the play will disclose the truth that the king is the killer of his father. Hamlet wants his genuine friend, Horatio to watch the king’s face when he sees the play.

  18. The king sees the plot is pretty much like what he has done to his brother, so he leaves angrily. • Hamlet and Horatio are sure that the king is the murderer of Hamlet’s father. • The queen sends Polonius to tell Hamlet that she wants to talk to her. • Hamlet decides to rebuke her but not to harm her.

  19. Act III Scene 3 • The king views Hamlet as a threat to his throne and life. He summons the friends of Hamlet to take Hamlet to England as soon as possible. • Hamlet sees Claudius praying and he doesn’t want to kill him now because in that way, he will send the king to heaven directly.

  20. Act III Scene 4 • Polonius hides himself behind an arras when Hamlet is talking to his mother. • Hamlet intimidates his mother so she cries for help. Polonius reacts behind the curtain and yells. Hamlet then draws his sword and thrusts it through the arras and kills Polonius. • Hamlet accuses the queen of lustfulness.

The ghost appears as the protector of the queen. • Hamlet begs his mother don’t sleep with Claudius. • He says he distrusts his friends and they are doing some foul things for Claudius and are taking him to England. • The queen confesses that she knows the exile. • Hamlet leaves pulling Polonius’ boby.

  26. Act IV Scene 1 • Gertrude describes the killing of Polonius to Claudius. • Claudius resolves to banish Hamlet quickly and bids Rosencrantz and Guildenstern bring Hamlet to him.

  27. Act IV Scene 2 • Rosencrantz and Guildenstern finally find Hamlet and ask him for Polonius. • Hamlet shows contempt for them by regarding them as sponges and parasites. • Hamlet agrees to see the King, to whom he refers as a “thing.”

  28. Act IV Scene 3 • Claudius explains to his assembled courtiers that to avoid a riot, he will exile Hamlet instead of putting the strong law on him. • While Claudius asks Hamlet Polonius’ whereabouts, Hamlet taunts him with the image of maggots.

  29. Claudius tells Hamlet that a boat waits to take him to England. • As soon as Hamlet and the guards leave, the King soliloquizes a plea to the King of England to execute Hamlet quickly and cleanly.

  30. Act IV Scene 4 • On Hamlet’s way to England, he observes Fortinbras leading his troop through Denmark toward Poland. • Hamlet reflects on the fact that the Norwegians are willing to die over land worth nothing to anyone, but he possesses sufficient reason to revenge yet remains paralyzed. • Hamlet resolves to “be bloody or be nothing worth.”

  31. Act IV Scene 5 • Gertrude reluctantly agrees to see Ophelia, who has become insane. • Ophelia enters singing fragments of songs about death and unrequited love. The King and Queen both try to speak with her, but she replies only unintelligibly.

  32. Laertes and a mob break into the castle to regain him his father, Polonius. • Claudius manages to placate Laertes until Ophelia returns, singing incoherent snippets of a song about a dead old man. • Claudius promises Laertes satisfaction in avenging Polonius’ death.

Act IV Scene7 • Laertes is angry because Claudius doesn’t punish Hamlet for crimes. • After getting Hamlet’s letter, now Claudius knows he is still alive. • Claudius intends to kill Hamlet. a. a fencing match b. a poison wine *Gertrude interrupts their plotting with her report of Ophelia’s drowning.

  40. Act V Scene1 • Two gravediggers discuss the burial for which they are digging. • The first gravedigger tells Hamlet that he has been digging graves since the day Old King Hamlet defeated Old King Fortinbras, the very birthday of Prince Hamlet–“he was mad and sent to England”– thirty years ago.

  41. Though the first gravedigger plays with puns, he finally asserts that the grave is one belonging to a woman. • Then Hamlet discovers a particular skull, and the gravedigger tells him the skull belonged to Yorick who was King’s jester. • At this moment, Hamlet thinks about something.

  42. All men are worm’s meat, and all will one day die. No rank or money can change the equality of death. Death transforms even great kings like Alexander into trivial objects. • Not long, Hamlet and Horatio observe that the Queen, King and Laertes arrive with a group of mourners carrying a coffin.

  43. Laertes argues with the priest over Ophelia’s burial. • When Ophelia’s body is placed into the grave, Hamlet now realizes that it is Ophelia. Then Hamlet and Laertes argue over who loves Ophelia best in the grave. • Gertrude decries her son’s madness, and Claudius asks Horatio to take care of Hamlet. What’s more, he implies that another death will serve as Ophelia’s memorial.

  44. Act V Scene2 • Hamlet tells Horatio that at the ship he discovers a letter which will be sent to the English King. • Hamlet replaces the letter, so Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are killed by English King. • Then Osric enters and tells Hamlet that Laertes invites him to duel and the King has wagered Hamlet will win.

  45. Though Horatio is worried about Hamlet, Hamlet still decides to fight. “One can’t avoid one’s destiny.” • Before they start to duel, Hamlet asks Laertes to forgive him. • The two choose their swords, and Claudius sets wine out. (pearl) • Hamlet hits Laertes two times. (Osric, the referee)

  46. Claudius assures Gertrude that Hamlet will win. Gertrude offers Hamlet the wine, but Hamlet refuses to drink. • Though Claudius asks her not to drink, Gertrude still does. die (lock the door) • In the fight, Laertes wounds Hamlet, then both drop their swords. Hamlet grabs Laertes’ sword and hit Laertes.

  47. Laertes reveals the murder plot to Hamlet. In a fury, Hamlet kills the King, Claudius. (pour the poisoned wine) * Before Hamlet is dead, he tells Horatio that telling his story to everyone, and ensuring the Danish crown passes to Fortinbras. * Fortinbras orders that Hamlet should be given military honors. His body is carried out, and the play ends.
