What does it mean to be healthy? • Being an appropriate weight • Reducing risk of illness • Enjoying life • Being able to do what you want • Feeling well • Living a healthy old age
Why concentrate on weight? Being overweight can be a result of lifestyle • Eating the wrong type of foods • Not taking enough exercise • Sedentary jobs • Lack of self confidence – leading to overeating
Obesity • In Scotland - 65% men overweight / obese - 60% women overweight /obese • Men more likely than women to be overweight than obese
What are the risks? Increased risk of • High blood pressure – risk of stroke, kidney disease • heart disease • Diabetes – kidney failure, blindness, heart disease • Back pain, joint pains, decreased mobility
Diabetes • The incidence of diabetes is increasing in the general population, reaching about 10% of the population in the age 65+. • 3.8% men and 3.7% women aged 16+ have diabetes • 1-2 children are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes each year compared with none about 5 years ago. • Having PKU does not change the risk – think of a low phenylalanine / restricted carbohydrate diet!!
PKU • Many professionals have “tunnel vision” • The diet and lifestyle looked upon sympathetically • Many parents give unhealthy foods too often to make up for the restrictions • Upset when weight discussed – have enough to cope with.
The excuses! • Those scales must be wrong! • I will find time tomorrow • It’s my hormones / genes • All my family are big and they are fine • I don’t have time • I can’t afford to eat healthily • I am not overweight
The next step • Look at your day • Keep a diary • Who does what ? • Delegate • Find a little time
Change one thing • Find a like minded friend • Take the stairs • Limit TV / computer • Eat more fruit and vegetables • Drink more water • Stop between meal snacks
