When Do I Submit? • Early Action: November 1 or November 15 NON-BINDING • Early Decision: November 1 or November 15 BINDING • Rolling Admission: Still earlier is better • Apply early even if not choosing Early Action/Decision • Beware of ALL DEADLINES, especially near holiday time (December 31, January 1, February 15)
The Common Application • www.commonapp.org • Select: Never Registered? Go Here • Register: Be careful and PROOFREAD. What is typed in is put on ALL official college applications. Don’t make a simple mistake with capitalization and grammar, not worth it. • Start entering information in “Personal Data” section
Once you Register with Common App • It saves your information for later, allowing you to apply to more than one college at once • Use “College Search” to look for your schools • DO NOT forget your username and password…you WILL need it often! • Use “save” regulary but DO NOT click “submit” until absolutely sure it is perfect: PROOFREAD • Be aware of which schools require supplements • CommonApp will keep track of all supplements completed and payment
Important Sections • Activities • Less is more • Inform, but be concise • Elaborate, do not exaggerate • The best goes at the top • Be honest and truthful, want to see involvement and commitment, not a long list of activities
Important Sections • Writing Samples • “Short Answer”= 1 Paragraph Essay • “Personal Essay” =separate assignment and attachment • Disciplinary History • Can be an opportunity, not the “kiss of death” • As with any writing, it is an essay • BE HONEST • Was it a learning opportunity? Did it change you?
The SUNY Application • www.suny.edu/student • Create username and password • Remember your login, you will use it OFTEN • Work through the application filling out all information, DO NOT SUBMIT but Save often • Proofread
