  5. Characters • Characters cannot actually DO anything to us as readers/viewers. This is because they don’t actually exist. • Don’t write: Coral used many different ways to…. • Remember, the author constructs the character to do things to us. 6. Better Words • Position, manipulate, evoke, provoke, elicit, derive • Challenge, test, question, subvert, debase • Accept, agree, concur, validate • Good, admirable, reputable, effective • Constructed, composed, formulated, manufactured, designed • Applied, practised, implemented, employed

  7. Sentences • Simple sentence: subject and predicate (verb). • He walked to the shops. • Compound sentence: 2 simple joined by a conjunction • He walked to the shops because he was hungry. • Complex sentence: the inclusion of a subordinate clause (can’t stand alone as a sentence) • He walked to the shops, thinking about what he would buy, because he was hungry.

  8. Sentences cont… • Comma pairs: when you add extra information to the sentence • Roy, Coral’s husband, has been constructed to… • Using semi colons: when you would like to link two ideas together but not by using different sentences • Roy and Coral demonstrate traditional gender stereotypes in relation to grief; Roy is more logical and Coral is far more emotional.

  9. Sentences cont.. • By reordering clauses within a sentence When he reached the top of the hill, Tom waited.Tom waited when he reached the top of the hill. • By embedding a subordinate clause inside the main clause The teacher, as he hurried along, didn’t notice that he had dropped the exams. • By starting with a non-finite verb Trembling, she reached out and opened the door. • By starting with a connecting verb Laterthat night, Jim and Jenny set out on their journey.
