Geography • Located in central Africa, northeast of Angola • Slightly less than one-fourth the size of the US • Tropical climate; hot and humid in equatorial river basin; cooler and drier in southern highlands; cooler and wetter in eastern highlands; north of Equator • Located in the Congo River Basin • Mountainous terrain in the east • Around 905,063 sq. mi.; about the size of the U.S. east of the Mississippi • Capital: Kinshasa
Natural Resources (Gold nugget) • Agricultural products: coffee, sugar, palm oil, rubber, tea, quinine, cassava (tapioca), palm oil, bananas, root crops, corn, fruits, and wood products • Mineral resources: diamonds, gold, copper, cobalt, and coltan zinc
People (person) • There are over two-hundred different African ethnic groups in the Congo • the majority are Bantu; the four largest tribes - Mongo, Luba, Kongo (all Bantu), and the Mangbetu-Azande (Hamitic) make up about 45% of the population • The official language, like most African countries, is French • The population: 68,692,542
Health • Life expectancy: Male, 52.58 years Female, 56.2 years • Infant mortality rate: male, 89.11 deaths/1,000 live births female: 73.07 deaths/1,000 live births • Major infectious diseases: malaria, plague, and African trypanosomiasis, bacterial and protozoan diarrhea, hepatitis A, and typhoid fever. • Risk of infection: Very High
Government • Even though the name says that it’s democratic, Congo is actually a republic • Suffrage: 18 years of age; universal and compulsory • chief of state: President Joseph KABILA • following the assassination of his father, Joseph KABILA succeeded to the presidency which he retained through the 2003-06 transition; he was subsequently elected president in October 2006 • Diplomatic representation in the US: Ambassador Faida Mitifu Chief of State: Joseph Kabila Ambassador Faida Mitifu
Economy Money! • Even with the vast amounts of natural, high value resources, Congo-Kinsasha is in an extremely unstable economy • Because of civil wars and regional factor conflicts, tourism is almost non-existent • Nearby Rwanda is also attacking the Congo and stealing local resources • The GDP per capita is only 300$ • A good thing is that there is no unemployment rate
