  2. Importance of the 12 Tables • What were the tables & why were they impt’? • Written laws • Everyone (rich or poor) had access to laws & punishments • Examples • If a father gives up son for sale 3 times, son shall be free.

  3. Examples of Laws Cont’d • If anyone has sung or composed a song against another person that was causing slander or insult . . . He shall be clubbed to death. • There are eight kinds of punishments: fine, fetters, flogging, retaliation in kind, civil disgrace, banishment, slavery, & death

  4. Roman Family Life • Pater familias: Father in charge of family • Responsible for welfare of ENTIRE family • Pater=judge, jury, priest & autocrat who could punish, execute, or dispose of family member or material possession
