Peshwas were a part of the Maratha kingdom and were responsible for administrative activities. They can be considered as the Prime Minister of Maratha Kingdom. • When they became more and more powerful, they also started issuing their own coins. Let’s understand some important aspects about Peshwa coins.
Peshwa coins can be found in various denominations like Half Rupee, Quarter Rupee and 1 Rupee. • They were all struck in silver and featured interesting designs and inscriptions.
Since different Peshwas were assigned different territories, they were issued from various mints. • Some of these Mints include Ahmadabad, Gulshanabad which is known as Nasik today, Jalaun, Miraj which is known as Murtazabad today, Poona or Pune and Sagar.
Quarter Rupee Peshwa coins were struck in Silver, weighed 2.6 to 3.0 grams and were issued in various sizes . • They followed a die-struck minting procedure and a Fasli Era calendar system. Some of them were issued in 1243. The Half Rupee weighed around 5.6 grams.
