  2. Objectives: At the end of the (session 2) the student shall have knowledge of: • Adolescent health needs • National health programmes related to adolescents.

  3. Adequate diet for growth and development • Healthy lifestyles • Education and health • Counseling • Supportive environments • Prime need- Correct information Health, nutrition, growth and development ,Reproduction, sexuality and HIV, STD’s/STI’s NEEDS

  4. Parents perceptions, awareness attitudes and ambition about adolescents Health seeking behavior SOCIAL FACTORS IN HEALTH AND DISEASE Communication with mothers

  5. NATIONAL HEALTH PROGRAMMES FOR ADOLESCENT HEALTH & DEVELOPMENT • School Health Programme • Adolescent Reproductive Health • National HIV/AIDS Control Programme • Programme for Out of school Adolescent girls • Adolescent Girls Scheme

  6. SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAMME • > ½ are in school • Health, Nutrition, Population education programme • Health checkup, T.T. at 10 & 16 yrs, Fe & FA ( National anaemia control programme, RCH) • Drawbacks…..

  7. ADOLESCENT REPRODUCTION HEALTH • RCH- Medical officers, health supervisors, health workers are trained on issues of adolescent health. • Prevention of anaemia and malnutrition, reproduction, menstrual cycle and hygiene, age of marriage and child birth, risk of teenage pregnancies, prevention and control of RTI/STI and HIV/AIDS, voluntary blood donation, contraception, unsafe sex and abortions.

  8. NATIONAL HIV/AIDS CONROL PROGRAMME • IEC activities - youth and college students, “AIDS education in schools”…..mainly urban areas • Schools- • Universal Talk AIDS Programme,1991 Creating awareness in schools, colleges & universities, Dept of youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of H.R.D. & National Service Scheme. NSS- manual in 7 languages • Other parts of the country mainly- mass media

  9. PROGRAMMES FOR OUT OF SCHOOL ADOLESCENTS New initiative started in the year 2000 in ICDS, for adolescent girls “ Kishori Shakti Yojna” (KSY)
