Research aims Substantive aims: • To advance social scientific understandings of the gendered social contexts of suicide. • To explore the contribution of qualitative research for exploring the social contexts of suicidal lives.
Methodological aims: • To develop methods for combining diverse kinds of qualitative evidence in an understanding of suicide • To engage academics and policy makers, more familiar with working with quantitative evidence, in the application and understanding of qualitative data.
Multi-modal data on individual suicides • Coroners’ files on 100 cases, from a district which includes a medium-sized city, a small industrial town and a rural area • Six in-depth cases: interviews with relatives, friends and professionals • Media accounts
