    1. Galatians The pedagogue

    2. Review We are saved by faith in Christ, not by works of the Law Proof from the purpose of the Law Law not designed to save (give life) Law designed to condemn Illustrated with Scripture as a law and a jail Condemns and confines Now a further illustration of the purpose of the Law

    3. The pedagogue Paidagogos – lit., “child-leader” Diff. English translations “schoolmaster”, “tutor”, “conductor”, “teacher” None do justice to the Greek term

    4. The pedagogue Paidagogos – lit., “child-leader” A slave hired to raise a child from after weaning until adulthood Some started as early as 3 or as late as 7 Some finished as early as 8 or as late as 21 The slave was property of the master Could be sold or executed for poor performance Could be set free for good performance Could be rewarded for exceptional performance

    5. The pedagogue Paidagogos – lit., “child-leader” The child had no rights Pedagogue had complete control over child Parents often didn’t see children for days or weeks Pedagogue could punish the child Situation unchanged until whatever age set by the father

    6. The pedagogue Paidagogos – lit., “child-leader” Pedagogue’s responsibilities Physical health, well-being of child Fed, clothed, etc Moral character Values, courtesy, respect, etc. Mental learning May have been a tutor May have brought child to a tutor Functioned as a mentor

    7. The pedagogue Gal 3:24-25 The Law functioned as a pedagogue until faith in Christ The Law kept people physically well The Law taught people proper character, values The Law helped us learn about God, His plan, etc. The Law disciplined/condemned when we erred The Law had authority until faith in Christ came

    8. Practical application Now that faith in Christ has come What purpose does the Law serve? Like a retired pedagogue No longer has authority But still a source of learning, advice, etc.

    9. We are children of God God is our Father (3:26) For a time we were under the Law (pedagogue) We matured when we believed in Christ Now the pedagogue (the Law) is retired Now we take our place as children of God When are we freed from the Law?

    10. Baptized into Christ Gal 3:27-28 Faith in Christ will lead you to “put on Christ” The moment faith becomes effective is when one submits (Jms 2:19-20) Faith gives the right to become a child of God (Jn 1:12) When you are baptized (immersed), you become a child of God, freed from the Law No differences, all people saved the same way

    11. Tying up the loose ends Gal 3:29 If you belong to Christ (by faith and baptism) Then you are Abraham’s descendants (3:7) And an heir of the promise to Abraham (3:8-9) You can receive the same blessing as Abraham Justified by faith (3:6) If you believe like Abraham And act upon that belief like Abraham
