Finding & Electing Effective Leaders • Don’t just fill vacancies—look for motivated, active, and committed people for Board positions. • Institute a method to encourage new leaders. • Avoid Boards that self-perpetuate and become stagnant. • Institute a nomination and election process that ensures fairness and equal opportunity. • Use Committees to Build Leadership.

Effective Meetings Committee or Board • Agenda is a must. • Adhere to the agenda. • Add items brought up during the meeting to the end of the agenda OR • Assign work to a committee. • Board meetings are not committee meetings! • Choose an effective Chairperson, they should be: • Motivated • Confident • Someone everyone respects. • Organized and a systematic thinker. • Capable of commanding control without being offensive. • Not in it for themselves but rather focused on the plan for the organization and their important role as part of that plan. • Does not grandstand—and doesn’t enable grandstanding by others. • Utilize Roberts Rules of Order
