Overview • Background • Phase -1 • Objectives • Methodology • Phase -2 • Objectives • Phase -3 • Objectives • Phase -4 • Objectives • Audit Results • Recommendations • Moving Forward IPv6 TASK FORCE MEETING, APAN XIAN MEETING, 28.8.07
Background IPv6 TASK FORCE MEETING, APAN XIAN MEETING, 28.8.07
Background • Malaysia’s IPv6 timeline states that tier-1 ISPs must be able to provide IPv6-based connectivity by end of year 2006. • NAv6 was appointed by MCMC to analyze the readiness of tier-1 ISPs in phase 1 IPv6 compliance testing. • The audit was executed successfully on 23 march 2007. IPv6 TASK FORCE MEETING, APAN XIAN MEETING, 28.8.07
Phase-1 Audit IPv6 TASK FORCE MEETING, APAN XIAN MEETING, 28.8.07
Phase 1 Audit Objectives • To produce an unbiased validation of the current ISPs IPv6 self compliant status based of the 9 suggested RFCs. • To provide consultation for the ISPs on the deployment of IPv6 networks for future setup. • To provide the regulatory body (MCMC) an overview of the current ISP’s IPv6 deployment status. IPv6 TASK FORCE MEETING, APAN XIAN MEETING, 28.8.07
Phase 1 Audit Methodology • Straight forward IPv6 network setup verification. • Only covers the local network setup by the ISP. • Divided into 3 Test Groups: • Group 1:- Basic network connectivity tests • Group 2:- Interconnectivity tests • Group 3:- IPv6 support in DNS extensions IPv6 TASK FORCE MEETING, APAN XIAN MEETING, 28.8.07
Phase-2 Audit IPv6 TASK FORCE MEETING, APAN XIAN MEETING, 28.8.07
Phase 2: Inter-ISP Connectivity • Objectives • Auditing the IPv6 connectivity between ISPs. • The audit will cover: • RIPng Operations & Interoperability • Test interoperability of the a device with other RIPng capable devices. • OSPFv3 Interoperability • Test many aspects of the OSPFv3 protocol. • BGP4+ Interoperability • Test many aspects of the BGP4+ protocol IPv6 TASK FORCE MEETING, APAN XIAN MEETING, 28.8.07
Phase-3 Audit IPv6 TASK FORCE MEETING, APAN XIAN MEETING, 28.8.07
Phase 3: Commercial & Advanced IPv6 Network Services • To test the availability and support of IPv6 in current Commercial as well as Advanced Network Services. • These audit covers: • Customer oriented services such as xDSL, Email, DNS, Web-hosting etc. • Operational network services, FTP, SSH, NTP, Intranet network services etc. IPv6 TASK FORCE MEETING, APAN XIAN MEETING, 28.8.07
Phase-4 Audit IPv6 TASK FORCE MEETING, APAN XIAN MEETING, 28.8.07
Phase 4: Wireless Broadband & Full IPv6 Connectivity Capability • Test the IPv6 capabilities of Wireless Broadband Services provided by ISPs. • The audit will also verify the capabilities of the ISPs to provide connectivity and services at the commercial level. IPv6 TASK FORCE MEETING, APAN XIAN MEETING, 28.8.07
Audit Results IPv6 TASK FORCE MEETING, APAN XIAN MEETING, 28.8.07
Audit Results • From the seven tier-1 ISP’s in Malaysia, only six ISPs were audited. • All six (6) ISP’s fulfils the criteria and are phase-1 IPv6 Compliant. • Time.com because it was not prepared to be audited as its network is not phase-1 IPv6 compliant yet. IPv6 TASK FORCE MEETING, APAN XIAN MEETING, 28.8.07
Recommendations IPv6 TASK FORCE MEETING, APAN XIAN MEETING, 28.8.07
Recommendations • A routing level compliancy test is required to move IPv6 compliancy a step further. • ISPs should have their networks equipped with IPv6 routing capabilities. • ISPs need to create their IPv6 Websites with dual-support. • Establish IPv6 peer-routing between ISPs and MYREN. • Technical staffs from the ISPs should join the discussion forums. • Operational and technical staffs from the ISPs should be involved in attending IPv6 certification training. IPv6 TASK FORCE MEETING, APAN XIAN MEETING, 28.8.07
Moving Forward IPv6 TASK FORCE MEETING, APAN XIAN MEETING, 28.8.07
Moving Forward • The need for strong enforcement and leadership from MCMC within full support from NAv6. • Use a different phrase such as IPv6 compliance/readiness exercise or assessment. • Impose Phase-2 , Phase-3 & Phase-4 IPv6 Audit which will focus on core routing and services. • ISPs which achieve IPv6 Compliance Audit should be given Malaysian IPv6 Level 1 Certified.
