  1. IPY: Observing the dynamics of the deepest waters in the Arctic OceanMary-Louise Timmermans & Luc Rainville, WHOI

  2. Background • The deep (>2400 m) Canada Basin has been isolated from shallow waters for ≈ 500 yrs. • Preliminary measurements (PITSA mooring, 2002) show an unexpectedly active deep basin. • Is the deep basin more dynamic than previously supposed, or are the events unusual? • What is the source of activity? How do shallow water changes propagate to the deep? • Plan: deploy deep instruments on two moorings • in the Canada Basin over one year, 2007-2008. • Goal: to uncover the dynamics of the deep water • and understand the potential impact of a changing • Arctic Ocean on these waters.

  3. Instruments to be deployed on the deep portion of 2 Beaufort Gyre Observing System Moorings (Andrey Proshutinsky et al.)

  4. Moored instruments in the deep Canada Basin for IPY 2007-2008 Deployment from CCGS LSSL in Aug. 2007, recovery in 2008 Data will be made available at www.whoi.edu/beaufortgyre/data.html Alaska

  5. Site D: Instrument configuration
