  4. Closing the GAP • ESL students leaving ABE still not college ready! • They need exposure. • ESL students are competing with English speaking students educated in a K-12 system.

  5. 2000 Census • 35% of Texas households speak a language other than English • 70% of El Paso households speak a language other than English

  6. ESL Bridge Class • Metaphor: dress rehearsal for college • Trying on college in a safe and nurturing environment • Transportation, child care, scheduling, build confidence, rub shoulders with other students at college

  8. Major Components of ESL class240 hours semester 15 hours per week • Academic ESL (Reading, Writing, Language Readiness) - 96 hours • Math Readiness – 96 hours • Personal Readiness – 18 hours • Career and College Readiness – 30 hours

Academic Readiness (96 hours) • Language Readiness includes grammar, vocabulary, listening and speaking skills • Integrate on-line practice using Pearson’s NorthStar and Focus on GRAMMAR 3 • The Five People You Meet in Heaven, Mitch Albom: Anchor text to bring in multi-disciplinary content, literary elements… • Six Weeks to a Brain Upgrade: A Student’s Quick Start Guide for Using Brain Research to Boost Learning, Dr. Janet Zadina

  12. Assessment • Placement into ESL Bridge • TABE scores: 6th-9th in reading • Teacher recommendation • Exit from ESL Bridge • COMPASS ESL • Exit Interview to be conducted by ESL Bridge instructors and ABE representation. • TABE
