So, we continue.... What is LOI 3? - How the different facets of society have different degrees of responsibility towards the environmental impact of a products lifecycle. Responsibility......one of the main and most interesting related concepts in our unit. But how do we show it? Where does it come into our arguments? What do you think is the connection with the LOI 1 and 2 ? Can it be investigated and shown in our presentations separately? LOI 3 – Presentation
What is the answer?....... LOI 3 – Presentation
No, it can’t. Why?!!!!!!!!! I hear you ask. Well, its pretty straight forward. I’ll explain. But first, what does Responsibility mean? LOI 3 – Presentation
Responsibility is: “1.answerable or accountable, as for something within one's power, control, or management (often followed by to or for): He is responsible to the president for his decisions. 2.involving accountability or responsibility: a responsible position.” from http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/responsible (see the quotation marks? This is how you take a quote from somewhere, copying and pasting relevant information – and its not mine so I put “” at either end, see ) LOI 3 – Presentation
So itsaysthatbeingresponsibleisbeingheldaccountableforsomething– one’spower, control ormanagement. Hmm.Control…….management……. Where do youthinkthatthis comes intoplaywithinthearguments? Whatconnections can bemadewith LOI 1 and 2? Any ideas? LOI 3 – Presentation
Q: If people were responsible, would there be a concern over impacting the environment?.. Would we be having this argument? Probably not. So that means that within this investigation there areresponsibleactions and irresponsible actions occurring. It is up to you to find out who is doing what. LOI 3 – Presentation
But before we continue we need to know what this fancy word ‘facets’ means. Facets are sections. So which sections of society are involved in this argument about causing impact on the environment during production processes? Come on, its easy. LOI 3 – Presentation
- Companies - Government - People ALL of them have responsibilities, and some of which are kept and some which aren’t. It is up to you to emphasise who is being responsible and who isn’t. LOI 3 – Presentation
SIMPLE LOI 3 – Presentation
A couple of Q’s to get you started.... Should the Environmental Activist concentrate on responsible actions or irresponsible actions in order to win the argument? And what about the Industry Spokespeople, what should they concentrate on? Look at the following slides to help you. LOI 3 – Presentation
Think (you may want to write these ) about the following Q’s when investigating your material. Remember, we are thinking about responsibility (or lack of) Is the process of extraction and its impact on the environment controlled/not controlled? Is the method of extraction as clean as possible? Does the industry have a ‘green’/environmental side? Is the waste produced from the process disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner? LOI 3 – Presentation
Can the material be recycled? How big is the recycling market? Is the industry investing in new ‘greener’ methods? What happens to the product after it is thrown away? Where does it go? Do we recycle everything? Can new products be made from 100% recycled material? LOI 3 – Presentation
I still don’t understand!............... That’s OK, here’s a summary: Environmental activist: Needs to show the lack of responsibility shown by the manufacturer/industry and the consumer (not recycling etc). This is why the project cannot go ahead!!!!! Industry spokesperson: Needs to show just how responsible the industry is. This is why the project should be given the big thumbs up. You have will to think of each others arguments and come up with counter arguments of course. LOI 3 – Presentation
So why can’t responsibility be shown separately then? Like I said: E.A’s - not only are you showing the environmental impact made by the extraction and process, you are explaining why it is happening......lack of responsibility. I.S’s – not only are you showing the process and how much it helps the economy etc but you are also showing that whatever you do, you do it in a responsible way. LOI 3 – Presentation
