Director of Materials Management/ Central Supply/ Central Sterile • Job Requirements • Career / Job Requirements • Bachelor of Science or Business Administration • 3 to 5 years work experience • Reports to the Chief Financial Officer, is responsible for the procurement of supplies & equipment for all hospital departments.
Director of Materials Management/ Central Supply/Central Sterile cont. RESPONSIBILITIES • Develop and maintain purchasing system to insure the best prices to the institution. • Develop and maintain system of sterilization that insures the adequate sterilization and timely distribution of sterile instruments. • Maintain Policy & Procedure Manual • Attend Product Evaluation Meetings • Maintain appropriate inventory, maintaining reorder and changes as needed • Conducts staff training and performance evaluations • Passes JCAHO surveys with no Type 1 recommendations
Reports to Director , Supervises Aide • High School Diploma or equivalent. • One year work experience • Licensure Required • Receives incoming supplies • Testing all sterilizers • Ensures operational status of decontamination room • Accurately assembles trays and instruments • Assist in instructing aides in proper sterilization • Knows and adheres to proper procedures and techniques for sterilization according to Joint Commission and AAMI standards Job Requirements Career / Job Responsibility’s
CENTRAL STERILE TECHNICIANS Must be able to identify instruments and accurately assemble surgical trays .
The Central Supply Clerk receives and issues supplies for the entire hospital and annexes.
CENTRAL SUPPLY CLERK Job Requirements Career / Job Responsibility’s • Reports to Director • Supervises Aide • High School Diploma • Medical and Computer Knowledge and on the job training • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds • Receives incoming supplies and handles damages and returns • Answers the phone, refers caller promptly and courteously • Handles counter request promptly • Insures that bins are labeled properly and maintains a clean warehouse • Pulls and delivers daily department stock to include counting and refilling carts and Pyxis Systems
Handles Instrument Sterilization and other supplies for the entire hospital and annexes.
Job Requirements Career / Job Responsibility’s • Receives all incoming supplies efficiently • Assures testing of all sterilizers and assist with maintaining constant operational status of decontamination room • Assist with proper assembly of trays and instruments • Performs all job duties as assigned • Reports to Clerk/ Technician/ Director • High School Diploma • Medical and Computer Knowledge and on the job training • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
Central Supply Departments Central Supply Central Sterile • Receives Purchase Request from Department Heads • Shops for the best price and best quality on items requested. • Awards Purchase Order to Company that met the above criteria. • Receives items on purchase order catalogs them into inventory and releases money to pay for purchases. • Receives equipment from purchasing. • It is cleaned, tagged and placed in the clean storage area awaiting a request form. • Equipment is sent out of Central Supply to the floors after receiving a request • After patient who needed the equipment has been discharged or no long need it, the equipment is sent to the C.S. Decontamination room
Central Supply Departments Central Supply Continued Central Sterile Continued • Central Supply Continues to keep records of supplies ordered , received, and supplies sent out to patients or the floors of the hospital. • Inventories are done frequently to make sure the items in the computer are on the shelves. • When items come into the decontamination room or dirty side, they are cleaned and processed and sent to the clean side for storage . • The Central Sterile “clean side” wraps instruments, surgical trays, etc.. And sterilizes them. They are then sent to the departments that uses them for storage
MEDICAL VS SURGICAL ASEPSIS MEDICAL ASEPSIS SURGICAL ASEPSIS • Medical Asepsis also called Clean Technique, is defined as procedures used to reduce the number of organisms present and to prevent the transfer of organisms. • Surgical Asepsis also called Sterile Technique, is defined as measures used to prevent contamination of an open wound, serves to isolate the operative area from the unsterile environment, and maintains sterile field for surgery.

MEDICAL VS SURGICAL ASEPSIS cont. • Equipment used in both medical and surgical asepsis are: antibacterial soap, and water for hand washing; gloves, gowns, and mask. • The differences of the above is surgical scrub brushes are generally used to wash hands prior to surgery, also gloves gowns and mask are sterile and put on just prior to surgery using sterile technique.

All items are received into the Central Sterile decontamination area for cleaning before being sent to the clean area. In the clean area items are stored or processed if necessary and sterilized.
