Jonah Praying –A Hebrew Sinner Saved Jonah:“Not about a great fish, but about a great God.” Campbell Morgan Not just about Jonah, not just about a “preacher on the run,” or a foreign people saved. So what great truth is this book telling us about God? 2:9 “Salvation comes from the LORD.”
1 – A Prophet Punished (1:17) God’s Punishment and God’s Salvation coincide. 1:17 & 2:10 bracket the prayer – the fish does it’s job! What Jonah deserved (2:5b,6,7) was drowning. What he GOT was a miracle of timing, and a sign of God’s grace.
1 – A Prophet Punished (1:17) Why aFISH? Why not driftwood or another ship to the rescue? His punishment was DEATH – and that is what he got! Buried for three days in the belly of a fish. Punished, but also saved. Note some words of mercy in Hosea writing soon afterwards - around 755 BC:
