Because there was no trust between the empires, different countries started to make alliances with other countries. Task: Write a definition for “alliance”. Look it up if you are not sure.
The first country to do this was Germany. 1882 Triple Alliance Germany made an alliance with Austro-Hungary and Italy 1887 Germany – Russia Alliance Germany made an alliance with Russia. This left France alone. They asked Britain for an alliance, but Britain was not interested.

Then in 1888, Germany forgot to renew the alliance with Russia, and France made an alliance with them. 1888 Dual Entente France made an alliance with Russia

Britain began to get nervous of Germany, in particular their growing navy which was a threat to Britain. 1904 Entente Cordiale France made an agreement with Britain. But it was not an alliance. They only agreed to leave each others’ colonies alone, not to help in a war. 1907 Triple Entente The Dual Entente (F&R) and the Entente Cordiale (B&F) were combined. But they still did not agree to fight together.
So, by 1907 Triple Entente Triple Alliance France Russia Austro-Hungary Germany Two blocks of countries, both powerful and determined to be successful. This was supposed to prevent war. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? Italy Britain Britain
