Sunshine College - Victoria Government Secondary school located within the Western Metropolitan Region of Victoria • ~1000 students (male & female) • Multicultural (>51 different nationalities) • Some students with intellectual disabilities & language disorders • 39 students in the Lighthouse Program • 15 deaf students
The issues • Problem solving is a large component of mathematics. • Many students struggle to understand written maths problems. • ‘Jimmy has 4 less marbles than Patrice who has 12’
A Brief History • In 2007, Sunshine College began a school-wide literacy program. • One of the successful components of the literacy program is Reciprocal Teaching. • Developed our own Reciprocal Teaching methodology to address language rich maths problems.
Reciprocal Teaching “The purpose of Reciprocal Teaching is to facilitate a group effort between teacher and students as well as among students in the task of bringing meaning to the text.” (Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, 2009)
Four main areas to Reciprocal Teaching in Mathematics The Big Question
Predict Look at the problem; write down what you think it is about. Find the BIG question What are you being asked to work out? Clarify Words you don’t know List all the helpful information from the problem. List everything that you need to know to solve the problem. Step 4 Turn over to...
