Ohio Schools and Internet2: Connectivity, Content and Collaboration for P20
Presenters • Ann Zimmerman, Manager Client Services, OARnet ann@oar.net • Paula Nespeca Deal, Consultant, INFOhio deal@infohio.org
Internet2 (I2) Basics • Connectivity • Content • Collaboration
Internet2 Available to Ohio Schools • Districts that use the OECN network as Internet provider through ITC. • Funded by ODE and managed by mc•tsg and OARnet. • School districts are responsible for additional charges. • INFOhio is providing training.
OARnet w/ All Connected Partners As of 2/20/2009
Ohio’s 21st Century Literacies • Information Literacy – “focuses on information found” • Technology (Digital Literacy) – more than computers: “knowing how to use the digital containers (Internet, blogs, wikis, databases) of information” • Media Literacy – “ability to access, analyze, evaluate and produce print and electronic media” Small, R. (Winter, 2008) Surviving in the Information Age, Threshold.

Technical Aspects of Using Internet2 as Part of The P20 Instructional Process • Slides 13-20 Duane Baker, retired from mc•tsg
Networking Requirements • Internet2 is made possible through • Ohio K-12 Network • Collaborative efforts of • Ohio Department of Education (ODE) • Ohio Academic Research Network (OARnet) • Technology Solutions Group of the Management Council – Ohio Education Computer Network (mc•tsg) • Only Ohio school districts participating in the Ohio K-12 Network have Internet2 access.
How Fast Is Internet2? • Most of the “backbone” connections of the Internet2 network are comprised of multiple 10 Gigabit Ethernet links. • Tributary connections on this network usually are comprised of multiple Gigabit Ethernet links. • Secondary connections on the Internet2 primarily consist of a single Gigabit Ethernet link. • End-Point connections are customarily 10-100Mb/s.
Videoconferencing Requirements • In General: • H.323 Videoconferencing using Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) • Minimum 768Kb/s • Point-to-Point or Bridged • eTech Ohio can bridge standard or HD videoconferencing. • HD requires an HD End-Point System
Computer Requirements • It depends on what you want to do! • In general, most computers that can support a Web browser session on the commodity Internet will work on Internet2 for Web browser applications. • Windows Vista/7 is self-optimizing, whereas Windows XP needs to be manually optimized for Web browser throughput.
Computer Requirements • Numerous applications on the Internet that can “tune” Windows XP. • Macintosh systems should be limited to Mac OS X machines for performance reasons. • All computers: • More memory is better • At least 50MB of temporary disk space • Switched Ethernet connection vs. Ethernet hub
Assists Software Updates • Software updates run much faster and more seamlessly on Internet2.
Expands Professional Development Opportunities • Informal collaborations using videoconferencing. • Formal Sessions
Internet2 is… • Content • Web sites and online resources dedicated to research and education. • Research – By institutions to develop revolutionary Internet technologies
Internet 2 provides global access across many applications and disciplines. Sciences University Courses Arts Museums Humanities Laboratories Health Care Zoos Business/Law Virtual Field Trips Library History H.323 Animation
Internet2Content and Activities • Content Repositories (music, film, animation, art, history, coursework) • Video Services (H.323, interactive, multi-media, multicast, on-demand) • Shared Resources (scientific apparatus, telescopes, imaging, surgery) • E-content Distribution (server technology, caching, co-location, storage) • Learning Courseware (Web content, streaming video)
Internet2 is … Collaboration • Internet2 fosters the partnerships and collaboration between Internet2 members and users in: • Academia- PreK-12 through Higher Ed • Industry • Government • International
K20 Initiativehttp://k20.internet2.edu • Connect and engage K-12s, museums, libraries, science and cultural centers, aquariums, community colleges, etc. • Increased opportunities for joint funding, collaboration with higher ed, student attraction, enhanced learning and education • Join muse, a social utility that connects you with Internet2-enabled technologies and educators in your region and around the globe.
Muse • K20 Initiative • http://k20.internet2.edu/ • Muse is a social utility that connects Internet2-enabled technologies and educators regionally and around the globe • Register and collaborate
Internet2:Changing Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century Classroom • I2 has interactivity with active “real-world, real-time learning” • I2 has predictable video/audio reception • Access to college courses via I2 prepares K12 for education
Advantages of I2 for Ohio K-20 are: • Schools and teachers can connect to resources outside of Ohio • Virtual field trips • Professional development • Best practices in other districts • More engaging learning targeting students’ different interests • Allows students to work together on common problem • College courses without traveling
