  1. DRAWING

  2. 1. Why? • To do Multimedia Design your produce • Story Boards • Sketches of Screen Layout • “Roughs” of 3D scenes • Design Promotional/Packaging material for your work • It is fun and rewarding

  3. 2. But I can’t draw! • Yes you can • Your need • “Touch” • To see rather than look • To practice • Something to draw with • Something to Draw on • Something to Draw • A positive attitude

  4. 3. Materials • Drawing Implements • Pencils, crayons, fountain pens, pastels, etc. • In fact, anything that makes a mark • Surfaces • Paper, card, canvas, etc. • Recommended you buy, • Pencils (HB,2B,&4B), eraser (putty, rubber) cheap paper to practice on and a sketch box • You will also need a support for the paper

  5. 4. Starting Out 1 of 2 • “The more I practice, the luckier I get”- Gary Player • Use the paper • Simplify • If you want photographic realism, use a camera • Really look at the subject continued/………

  6. 4. Starting Out 2 of 2 • Don’t be afraid to make a mistake • Believe you can do it • It took 3 years for Van Gogh to produce a reasonable sketch! • Avoid symbol thinking

  7. 5. An Experiment • Picture a table in your house/flat • Write down a description of it, what is on the top of it and anything near to the table. • Now draw it • You cannot draw well if you do not look • Faces experiment

  8. 6. Eyeline • Everything we see has an eyeline • The horizon • Horizon changes as we move our head • Keep the same viewpoint when drawing • Objects get smaller the further away they are • Does anything else appear to happen to them?

  9. 7. Perspective • Name to describe object getting smaller as they recede • 1 point perspective • 2 point perspective • Multipoint perspective

  10. 8. Problems with Perspective • Gets difficult/impossible to place all vanishing points • Does not work because paper is not infinite • Solution is draw what you see

  11. 9. Tone • Near objects have more contrast • An object crossing a dark/light boundary will appear to change tone • Try squinting to see tonal values

  12. 10. Tips to help if you are stuck • “Block Out” the sketch first • Try drawing negative shapes • If copying a photo, try drawing it upside down • Estimate relative angles & sizes with a pencil.
