A Map of Italy Rome Venice Naples Florence Turin
Travel Plans Armed with a small library of paperbacks and travel guides, thirty rolls of film, and the requisite gear from Mountain Equipment Co-op, my sister and I traveled to Italy in May. For one month we endured heat and crowds, marveled at art and architecture, gorged ourselves on Fanta and gelato, and blew our budget. Take a look…
Naples ~ Napoli • One of the many churches – Chiesa di San Francesco di Paola (left) • Other major sites to see are: • Castel Nuovo • Teatro San Carlo • Galleria Umberto I
Pompei Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79, destroying Pompei and other nearby towns such as Herculaneum.
The Spanish Steps Rome Piazza della Bocca della Verita
Ostia Antica One of the highlights of Italy was wandering the ruins of this ancient seaport, a quick daytrip from Rome.
Orvieto Bella Umbria • Located between Rome and Florence • With a magnificent duomo, Etruscan ruins, and small museums there is much to see • Browse in craft shops for ceramics, leather goods, and even marionettes
Florence ~ Firenze • “Hannibal” was filming in this area while we were visiting • Nearby the Palazzo Vecchio (left) is the Uffizi, while a short stroll across the Ponte Vecchio leads to the Palazzo Pitti with its charming Boboli Gardens
Venice~ Venezia A truly romantic place, Venice is crowded with wonderful canals, palaces, churches, and shops. A few islands are within a quick ferry ride from Venice – Murano, (right) known for its glass, and Burano, famous for its lace
The Cinque Terre Highly recommended by many guides, I found that the charm of the 5 villages was exaggerated. But perhaps it was the cockroaches in the hotel?
Milan ~ Milano Duomo Often overlooked, Milan is rich for exploring. If you are a person of means there is great shopping for you to do. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
MuseumsNot to Be Missed • Museo Archeologico Nazionale – Archaeological Museum, Naples • Museo Egizio – Egyptian Museum, Turin • Palazzo Ducale - Doge’s Palace, Venice • Vatican Museums - Rome • Uffizi - Florence
Caution! • On every trip there will be times when you are surprised, disappointed, or exhausted • I would not recommend Certosa di Pavia monastery, Turin’s Museo di Arti Decorative or Siena • Remember that sometimes you need a vacation from your vacation so be sure to plan a few days to rest Not all toilets were created equal! Hostels + Bongos + Wine =No Sleep
Arrivederci Italy is an amazing country! I can hardly wait to return!
