  3. Type of Government Italy has been a democratic republic since June 2, 1946, when the monarchy was abolished by popular referendum. The constitution was promulgated on January 1, 1948.

  4. Population • As of January 2011 Italy is estimated to have around 60.6 million people.

Industry, Resources, and Religions • Industry: Types--tourism, machinery, iron and steel, chemicals, food processing, textiles, motor vehicles, clothing, footwear, ceramics. • Natural resources: coal, mercury, zinc, potash, marble, barite, asbestos, pumice, fluorspar, feldspar, pyrite (sulfur), natural gas and crude oil reserves, fish, arable land • Religions:  predominately Roman Catholic with mature Protestant and Jewish communities and a growing Muslim immigrant community
