Why have a Psychiatry Rotation • Mental illness is very common and all of you will work with this patient population regardless of what area of medicine you land it!
Why have a Psychiatry Rotation • There is often apprehension about working with psychiatric patients. People fear they won’t know what to say, will say something that will set the patient off or harm them.
Why have a Psychiatry Rotation • You learn how to interact with psychiatric patients and will discover that you interact with psychiatric patients just like you interact with all the patients .…with respect, kindness and caring. Our patients are just not as fragile as you imagine!!
General Clerkship Structure • 6 weeks in length • Number of students varies by site • It is primarily in the inpatient setting • Call is until 11:00 PM and typically is once q week of the rotation • Work hours are usually from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM on noncall days
General Clerkship nuts and bolts • It is recommended you have a pager • You are off for holidays the UW honors • Time off must be arranged for ahead of time and are on a case by case basis • Information regarding the lecture series, grading polices, evaluation forms and just about everything else are on the clerkship website //depts.washington.edu/psyclerk
