Learning in Clerkship 1. How is Clerkship different ? Fewer lectures and more hands-on learning. Teaching half-days/lunch-time lectures . Working 30-100 hrs/week . 2. How to study in Clerkship? Ask questions in hospital ! Learn from residents and staff ! Read around cases Read objective notes Case files, Surgical Recall, etc. Figure out what works for you !
Tips for Clerkship Link block • Learn to write a SOAP note . • Know your physical exams. • Understand how charts work, MARs, and OACIS. • Get a locker at your hospital site . • Create a clerkship bag, with all of your basics in it • Always keep snacks in your bag • Granola bars store well in Scrub pockets ! • Carry multiple pens • Keep a notebook in your bag • Always carry your credit card/cash • Create templates and notes for the rotation you will be starting
Surviving Call • Keep your call bag in your locker. • Bring lots of food. • Bring a change of clothes and a sweater (Call rooms are very cold !!) • Comfortable shoes and warm socks . • Sleep when you can, keep hydrated ! • Bring your cell-phone/ipad charger. Post-call • Sleep for 4-5 hrs (Be up by about 2 pm) • Run-errands, cook, clean, laundry ! • Read for the next day

Being a good team player • Arrive on time (which means 10 mins earlier than your stated time ). • Take notes on your patients during rounds. • Take initiative to write notes on pts and fill out paperwork. • - Ask to try something you haven’t done before. • - Always ask for help ! • Advocate for your patients. • It may be 3am – always care and always be compassionate ! • Always ask if there is something you can do to help before you leave !
What to expect Internal • Busy days and calls • Lots of experience and responsibility Surgery • Early mornings • Ward issues, good experiences with consults • Busy call Acute Care - Excellent opportunity to learn hands-on skills
What to expect Pediatrics • Similar to internal – busy on the wards depending on the season • Call can be busy • Good exposure to NICU and Peds ED Psychiatry • Better Hours • PES experience on call • Home call
What to expect Family Medicine • Varied experience depending on site • Better hours in clinic • Usually no call Obs/Gyn • Mix of clinic, OR, wards and L&D • Hands on experience when on-call • Excellent base camp teaching

Take care of yourself Advocate for yourself – if you feel uncomfortable doing something, always let someone know ! If you’re not meeting the objectives for a rotation- let your resident know. Report when necessary (mistreatment, needlesticks, etc). Exercise, eat well, maintain a social life. Make time to call your parents and loved ones . To take care of someone in their time of need is an honour and privilege- try and always keep that in mind !
