  2. Wildlife Management Program • Active management for years • Historical driver is airport safety • Regulatory Drivers FAA Safety Regulations and the Endangered Species Act

Threatened and Endangered Species • Piping Plover and Wilson’s Plover are protected by land use restrictions during breeding season. • American Bald Eagle protected by land use restrictions during breeding season. • Peregrine Falcon breeding success is monitored at Wallops Island nesting tower.

  4. Federal Aviation Safety Regulations (Historical) • Habitat Modification • Aircrew Warnings • Harassment • Removal by limited hunting in accordance with DNR permits. • Wildlife Hazard Control Program, Appendix F of Range Safety Mission Handbook

  5. Deer and Small Mammals (Now) • 14 month assessment by USDA/APHIS/WS to determine species population statistics • Control Methods • Fencing surrounding Aircraft Operations Area. • Habitat Modification by removing or altering vital food, cover, and shelter. • USDA/APHIS/WS sharp shooting program for deer and trapping of small mammals.

  6. Migratory and non-Migratory Birds (Now) • 14 month assessment by USDA/APHIS/WS to determine species population statistics • Control Measures • Pyrotechnics for emergency dispersal of birds on airfield. • Propane Cannons for emergency dispersal of birds on airfield. • USDA/APHIS/WS sharp shooting program for deer and trapping of birds.
