Sources and Storage of Irrigation Water Chapter 2A
Sources of Irrigation Water • Conventional water resources • Surface water • Groundwater : springs, wells • Non-Conventional water resources • Dissalination • Wastewater reuse • Water imports
Surface water sources • Streams • Lakes • Reservoirs
Groundwater – Drilling methods • Cable tool method • Rotary methods • Air rotary
Components of wells • Well Screen • Gravel pack • Well Casing
Well Development • Objectives: • Increase yield by increasing permeability • For old wells: Reduced permeability, well incrustations • For new wells: To correct the damage to the formation which occurs during the drilling operation
Well development methods • Surging with compressed air: • Mechanical surging (a plunger, a piston in a cylinder). • Mechanical surging using a bailer. • Pack flushing using a test pump. • High velocity horizontal jetting with water. • Development by pumping using a variable speed pump.
