Background • Student life is moving online rapidly • Social networking is an important part of a student’s day • Instant messaging, email/SMS, and forums are rapidly replacing face-to-face communication • Question: How can these new types of interacting be used to an advantage?
Incentive structure • Section winners receive 2% extra credit • All students in a finalist team’s lab section receives 3% extra credit (to encourage commenting) • The best overall team receives an additional 5% extra credit and the runner-up receives an additional 2%
Results** See the paper for many more … ** • Preparing presentations helped students understand the material and study for an exam – watching them was less important • Teams were an important part of the competition, but division of labor may have been an issue (teams were randomly created) • Results for the fall semester were more favorable
Instructional Benefits • Areas of confusion can be identified • Omissions of key material can be discussed • Popular lecturing styles can be used in the future
